How do I become a sailor?
I don't mean join the navy and go on battleships or commercial frigates.
I want to be on a yacht and sail to far away places. How do I start?
Ok, there’s no need to be nasty, it is a question and has many answers.
If I were you I would first find your nearest yacht club, go and talk to some of the flag officers and perhaps join. Some yacht clubs have different rates depending on age or whether you own a yacht or want to crew.
Get involved and meet members, when people get to know you some will ask if you would like to crew for them. Get in touch with sailing schools who conduct courses and give qualifications, the main thing is to get some experience on other people’s yachts and learn about different rigs and boat design.
When you become competent to sail you can start looking around for yachts for sale. Again being a member of a yacht club can help. Get something cheap and cheerful as a first boat and not too big. You will make a few mistakes and you don’t want to damage a boat you can’t afford to repair.
When you have been sailing your own yacht around for a couple of years and have gained experience and gained qualifications in navigation etc, you can start looking for a yacht around the 10 metre / 34 feet mark. A boat this size will be comfortable enough for a life aboard.
