pontoon boat dealer
i live in PA and i build boats and i need to know some legal guide lines PLEASE HELP?
i build boats and i live by a river, i dont know much about the legal do and donts of it all,please help, first of all , is it legal to be on the river at all?( this is a homemade pontoon boat) next, if it is, can i put a small motor on it to run in the river? or do i have to get a license? next question , can i take it out on a lake without it being licensed? if i can take it on the lake (without a license) can i have a small engine on it?
if i do have to get a license , how do i get one? do i have to get it looked at by someone? or what? what are my limits?
please help me
Well, you may be building a boat - but I don't think you can quite call yourself a boatbuilder yet - because if you were, you would know all the answers to all your questions.
I have built boats for over 40 years. It has been a fantastic hobby for me. Still, even as a hobby, there are rules and regulations you must follow. So, here is what you need to know:
FOR SURE: You have to be every bit as "legal" in a homebuilt boat as in any other boat. That means making sure you yourself and your vessel are "legal" - both with State and USCG regulations.
1. The very first thing you need to be aware of is that you MUST save all your receipts for all materials for building your boat. Your receipts will eventually be your "proof of purchase" when you register your boat.
2. You have to file for a hull number. You want to do it now, as it will make your State registration go much smoother. (link for this is below).
3. You have to comply with all the boating rules and regulations as everyone else. That means you have to have passed your Boat Safety Course. Furthermore, your vessel must be equipped with all the same safety equippment as a manufactured boat one would buy from a dealer.
4. Once your vessel is completed, and registered. and equipped with all the required safety equipment, then you are good to go anywhere, anytime, just as any other boat.
