what are the ford diesel engines and how are they rated?
If you mean Ford diesels in light trucks in the F450 and under series, they have been using International Harvester engines for years. They are rated with a peak torque at an RPM, and a peak power at a higher RPM. I am sure this is brake-horsepower. The real difference, however, is I consider the diesel engine to produce "industrial" horsepower, which means it is available to the user for extended periods of time. If you have a powerstroke diesel 7.3L with turbo, you can get 200 HP out of it indefinitely, say when towing your boat up a hill. It will handle the output. A gasoline engine, however, with its "peak" power rating cannot be maintained indefinitely. Say you have a 200 HP 3800 V6 gas engine. It would blow up in a few thousand miles if you ran it continuously at 200 HP. That kind of difference is very huge when considering diesel vs. gas. Industrial horsepower is far more "real" than the silly "peak" horsepower they rate automotive products with. How long can you maintain 5400 RPM on a gas V10 to get the horsepower???? It just doesn't work the same.
Navistar/International Harvester was the first manufacturer to offer a turbo and direct electronic diesel injection in a Pickup sold in the US. This uses a very high pressure engine oil rail and solenoid valves to inject the fuel. Cummins and Isuzu copied the system, but the Navistar is still the original and still the best.
To meet emission requirements, Navistar is now offering their 5.9L 4 valve/cylinder direct-injected turbo with the variable vane technology and cooled exhaust gas recirculation. Very high tech and very high horsepower per cubic inch.
