Good places to buy a used kayak.?
I just want a solid kayak for a low price that I can use on calm waters. Craigslist can be kinda sketchy and thier prices aren't that great either. Is there a website or a certain store I should look at?
You can't generalize about Craigslist -- every ad is different every day. It still is the best place to find the best deals on used boats. But it's up to you to educate yourself about what models are appropriate to what you want, how to access condition of a used boat and what a reasonable price is for any model. I suggest you study the information at the free kayak and canoe paddlers site http://www.paddling.net
Paddling.net also has classified ads for used boats that you can search by your area.
You don't mention how much experience you have paddling -- if little or none you should take an intro paddling class and also try to get seat time in a variety of kayaks. Sort of late in the year for outfitters to be having on-the-water demo days but some do in order to unload kayaks for end of season clearance sales. This can be an opportunity to get a new boat on sale or pick up a used demo or even an outfitters rental boats for sale at a good savings. The more boats you have tried out the better equipped you will be to pick up one that you know will work for you.
I have bought and sold most of my kayaks used via Craigslist over the past decade -- in fact over a dozen of them. Decent value for a kayak in excellent shape less than 3 years old should be about 30% below retail. Boats older than 3 years but less than 10 with slight wear should go for half of list price. Anything older than 10 years should be about one third the original price as long as there are no major issues and the plastic is in good shape. Always remember that nothing is a bargain if it doesn't fit you or the kind of paddling you plan to do. Keep checking CL listings in your area and you can look up specific models on the Paddling.net site for data on their specs and for user reviews to get an idea what the boats are like. Do keep in mind that with low end recreational style kayaks (which I presume is what you intend to buy) most newbies tend to overrate their boats -- you will see a lot of "10 out of 10" ratings for crappy cheap boats I wouldn't use if you paid me.
Important factors you need to consider before haggling over price are :
1. does this boat fit me? Kayaks are not "one size fits all". Larger people need larger kayaks and smaller people need slimmer kayaks. If you don't have decent contact with the hull you can't control the boat well.
2. Also, even a kayak for "calm waters" (which, by the way, are never always calm and weather can change even the most placid pond or stream into a real challenge within minutes) needs to have sealed bulkheads in the bow and stern so it doesn't swamp and sink if you capsize or get hit by waves.
3. You also should never buy a boat with an oversized cockpit that won't support a spray skirt.
4. Is the boat in good condition? Scrapes on the bottom are no big deal and will not affect performance, but cracks, dry and crackly looking plastic, deep oil-canning (big dents in the hull from sitting on flat surfaces or racks in hot sun), holes in the hull and broken seat supports are good reasons to walk away. Be aware that getting parts for off -brand kayaks is usually impossible.
5. Stick with good mid-price brands like Perception, Dagger, Wilderness Systems, Venture, Jackson and Elie. ONe older brand that often shows up for sale that made good touring boats is Aquaterra -- they were a division of Perception in the 80's and 90's. I've picked up some nice used Aquaterra's for under $400 (models are Chinook and Spectrum for larger folks and Scimitar for average to smaller folks). Brands like Old Town and Future Beach that sell in big box and sporting goods stores tend to be ill-equipped and clunky. The most useful all around kayak for light flatwater touring is a 12' to 16' length that is 25" or less wide with deck rigging and front and rear bulkheads. Anything shorter or wider is going to be slow and not very maneuverable. I usually recommend people buy a boat with these specs as they are comfortable for a beginner but you won't get bored with them after one season.
Also look for boats for sale that include all the accessories. IF they throw in a decent paddle, a PFD and stuff you need like a sprayskirt and bilge pump, you will be saving hundreds of dollars buying that separately. And don't be afraid to go look at a kayak from a Craigslist ad and offer them less than what they have it posted for. They can always say no, but a handful of $100 or $20 bills can be awfully persuasive.
