I remember the bold C John very well, and I was in his 'studios' at Seil Island and Inveraray on numerous occasions. You're absolutely right about the most dreadful old tat being fobbed off onto the tourists. It was definitely a work of art to be able to flog 'Highland' souvenirs made in Taiwan to Japanese tourists.
C John's advertisements in the Argyll press were legendary – I wish I had one to hand, but I'm having to make do from memory – they always featured the artist in 'artistic' pose – goatee beard, horn-rimmed specs, yachting cap, cravat and silk shirt – tossing his head artistically while putting the finishing touches to his latest canvas and inviting readers to visit his studio -
“just ninety road miles from Glasgow, situated on the romantic and otherworldly Island of Seil, perched 'neath the shadow of the world-famous 'Atlantic Bridge', the quality of the light and atmosphere conducive to artist, poet and composer C John Taylor creating works of art, poetry and music to thrill you and your children, and their children in turn, for generations to come…………yada yada”
It was a very obvious scam – but very successful.

I notice among the comments there that there's a quote from his book of verse -
“Richard Burton's blue eyes frolic
Insanely when he's alcoholic…”
So far as his song lyrics are concerned, I'm always reminded of Billy Connolly's rant about the Soho jobbing songwriters who churned out 'Scottish' folk songs without ever having been north of Watford – Connolly then sings “Oh I wish I was back in the blue misty mountains of Tiree”, and then shouts “Tiree is flat as a fucking pancake !!”
C John was very much a 'blue misty mountains of Tiree' man.
In fairness, though, there are a few comments from some of C John's admirers. Each to their own.
Finally, an excuse to wear my yachting cap.
