That airbourne guy has a point. Did you know that on a pro-wrestler contract, the word "wrestler" never comes up? They are known as entertainers or superstars. This was meant to so the media and people in amatuer wrestling can stop making a fuss about how pro-wrestling isn't wrestling.

The only thing pro-wrestling and amateur wrestling have in common are few moves and a few of the rules. The rules are the 3-count pin, and the submission rule. And I believe all moves in amateur wrestling can be used. Head lock, hip toss, fireman carry, leg sweep. etc. But its the other way around. Pretty much 90% of the things pro-wrestlers do are not legal in amateur wrestling.

Now you have to understand, Pro-wrestling is a mixture of multiple styles. In Mexico, lucha libre is a distinct style, and the wrestlers are known as luchadors. The japanese have their own style all Puroresu, which is base on the tradition of American style wrestling, but they adapted it making it their own style which involves mix-martial arts. And believe it or not, a Japanese sumo wrestler was the first one to attempt to bring the style to Japan before World War II, but it wasn't popular in Japan til around 1951. So don't view it just as WCW and WWF. Its a world wide entertainment. Believe it or not, pro-wrestling has a lot of impact in history. Okay, maybe not pro-wrestling, but wrestling. Pro-wrestling was introduced through traveling carnivals, where they went from town to town to entertain people before they became a huge media following.

Did you know that wrestling is in the olympics? Ameteur wrestling is also known as Greco-Roman wrestling. Its the same concept, but from anicient times. Its that old. and Sumo wrestling has been around for a long time. You should look that up for your essay.

But to answer your question, a pro-wrestler is an entertainer. Its in their contract. For you three arguments, I might choose wrestlers, technique, and promotion. Like you said. The wrestlers are actually the same. To be a wrestler in both amateur and pro-wrestling requires stamina and endurance. The only differences is, in amateur wrestling, they are competing, while in pro-wrestling, they are actually working together to put on a show. (I hope you know its scripted, as in, the ending is decided already and the men are working together as they wrestle). The wrestlers are just men. In pro-wrestling, sometimes, the wrestlers are often given character roles, or "gimmicks" to entertain the fans. So if you see something disturbing on pro-wrestling, don't worry, chances it, they are just acting like their characters, not themselves. But sometimes, they do clash. In fact, most pro-wrestlers wrestled in highschool and went on to have a career in pro-wrestling. Look up Kurt Angle. Former gold Olympic medalist in wrestling and he became a very successful pro-wrestler. My only theory to why wrestlers pursue pro-wrestling is because of money and fame. Let admit it, unless your winning gold medals, you not getting fame, and your not gonna get paid a lot just to wrestle.

As for techinque, amateur style is greco roman, while in pro-wrestling, its catch on catch wrestling, mix martial arts, lucha libre, tons. There is also punching and kicking which is illegal in amateur wrestling. But the thing about it, it requires training to take hits. Thats also known as a "bump" which is when a wrestler fakes the impact while making it look like it hurts. So the men talk to each other before matches so they could learn to adapt to the others style, which is nice cause it sometimes introduces a clash of style. But learning how to take "bumps" is a fundamental style in pro-wrestling, because the moves they do can be dangerous and may result in injuries. (Think about it as the entire thing is a skit, but the action in the ring is real, acrobatic wise) One wrong move, and you can suffer a broken arm and worse.

Finally, for promotion.its obvious amateur wrestling has barely any media. Its only found in high school, college, and the olympics. As for pro-wrestling, there are tons. Its call entertainment. I don't know if you find it entertaining or not, but it is to others. Pro-wrestlers often take acting lessons and cut promos. You can probably say that wrestling is not about promoting, but pro-wrestling is all about promoting. Its not different from boxing. Sometimes, they have conference, the guys are acting all arrogant, and then everyone wants to see how it goes. Simple as that.
