What is the most reliable cuddy cabin style boat?
I want to get a boat but I've heard that boats are just holes in the water that you throw your money into. Hoping to avoid that, I would like advice from anyone knowing anything about the boats that I'm thinking about getting or any suggestions that I may not have considered (budget 20k). I've been shopping and have narrowed it down to a 2001 Mariah (218 Shabah), 2001 Regal (235 LSC), 2003 Chaparral (215), 2003 Four Winns (225 Sundowner) or a 2000 Sea Ray (215 Express Cruiser). Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!
Having over forty years of experience of boating and being a former instructor for boating, most of your choices are pretty good. For a $20k budget, there are plenty of boats available to you. ALL of the boats you listed will go for well below the $20k that you have. Personally, I own two Sea Rays and can tell you they are good boats. The next would be Regal, then Four Winns. The Sea Ray is a "Cabin Cruiser" and not a "cuddy". I own a 260 Sundancer which is a large sport cruiser. Cuddy cabin boats you'll not have the features of the Sea Ray. Cuddy Cabins are sparse and a person is NOT able to stand upright in the cabin area. Sea Ray is part of the Brunswick family of boats. This means that all of these boats are designed around the MerCruiser engines and drives and are the most reliable around.
I've boated with friends with the 215 Express Cruiser and can tell you it's a good boat. It's on the small side, but for a couple, it's a fun boat. For $20k budget, you can get much more boat than a 21'-23' boat used.
No matter how you roll, be sure to get a "Marine Surveyor" to inspect the vessel before the purchase and to do the "Title" search. This way you'll know the good, the bad, and the ugly about the boat, and also the value. This will save you a bunch of headaches in the future.
