four winns boats
Four Winns jet boat, OMC 115 Turbojet boat motor rebuild question ?
Had a major overheat. Top right cylinder has very low compression, 15LB, All others at 115. Pulled the head cover, looks like the rings came off and caused a hundred or so pits on the piston as well as inside the head cover, can not see cylinder walls yet. My questions is could just the one piston be replaced? Could just that one cylinder be bored if it is also damaged?
Called local marina {Columbus, Oh} they said sounds like a total rebiuild needed, 2500.00 for the motor, 1000.00 for parts, rebuild carbs and labor. 3500.00 total, Boats in great condition. These boats if running and look decent are worth only about 3000.00 or less.

The "major" overheat bothers me and your mechanic. The problem is you are looking at the first piston than completely failed. The rest were moments behind. The labor is about 3 hours different between one cylinder and all of them.- Even less if re-bored. Then the heads are warped and that silver looking stuff on all the valves is melted aluminum from some where.
No shop in it's right mind will do a single hole, as when the rest of them fail- they will be the rotten scoundrels who ruined your motor.

My 1984 Four Winns 17' boat with an i/o motor is making a high pitched squealing noise on acceleration. Why?
it certainly sounds like a slipping belt, and as the other poster mentioned, is often times the alternator belt. to know if that's it, you could tighten the belt a little and see if it goes away, or remove it all together and see if the noise is gone. the alternator creates more resistance when it's under load (like when the battery is not fully charged, from starting, or sitting for a while slowly draining.) so in theory, as the battery gets good and charged up - the squealing should stop.
if it's a different belt than the alternator - it would be good to know which part it's running, and determine if there is abnormal resistance (is the part opperating correctly and the belt is bad, or is the part malfunctioning causing the belt to squeal.) if it's driving the impeller, and there's a problem with it, it could cause overheating...
they sell "belt dressing," and other stuff to prevent it from slipping, but if the problem is the alt belt, i would just pony up the cash to replace it. if you tighten the belt more, there is a chance it could break (this happened on a friend's '87 carver.) at least carry a spare - you don't want the cost/annoyance of being dead on the water!
watch your voltage gauge. when the boat's running above idle, it should be around 14 volts. 12 1/2 volts means it's not charging properly
