Best live-on type of boat?
I am following my dreams. Looking to purchase a boat to live on, just myself. I will keep it in the chesapeake bay area on the east coast. I am rather new to boating. I have looked at houseboats, flybridges and trawlers. I am mechanically inclined. Just need to be educated on what is best for this environment. I have found several boats in my price range (30k to 40k). The average age is 10 to 15 years old.
For cruising the bay and a few inlets and possibly a offshore or inland waterway trip. What would be considered the best style for this application.
I am more Interested in type of boat than brand of boat.
I live aboard year round, on a 30' Sailboat. Here at my marina, live aboard on sail boats out number power boat live aboards about 25 to 8. Of the 8, 3 are large (50' and up) 2 are house boats and 2 are trawler style. Of the sailboats most are 35' to 42 ' Sloops. Several of the sail boaters are older single men. I don't know why. Couples gravitate to larger Powerboats. Being new to boating, Power boats are easier to drive, but often have more complex systems and there is a learning curve on living aboard. Sailboats have engines and are relatively easy to handle. They are easier to heat in winter. With fuel cost unpredictable, they are much better for cruising, inland water ways (under power) or offshore (sail or power) and are actually safer than power at sea. So, I'd go sail. Good Luck!
