am looking to buy a sailboat, for mainly coastal cruising but with some offshore passages planned in the futur?

the general criteria is:

length 40-50 feet, price range US$200,000 - 300,000
GRP or wood construction
classic lines
a reasonably fast sailing boat, to windward
ease of handling when shorthanded
very safe in heavy weather
powerful motor that will push boat at a good speed even through rough water
separate shower
comfortable down below for extended live aboard periods
prefer aft cockpit
open to a pilot house
new or secondhand
2 double cabins would be good with heads,
but not essential
some boats I have looked at are Island Packet, Halsberg Rassey, Rustler, Hinckeley, Tartan
grateful for any advice anyone might offer based on own experiences

We bought a 1994 44 ft Mason in 2003, and had looked at exactly the same other boats you had, except we had also looked at Valiants and Crealocks. We had not heard of a Mason until we saw it and fell in love immediately.
I agree with the previous responder that used is better than new. New has all the headaches as old, but is so much more expensive.
We have been delighted with our decision. Mason was built at the Ta Shing shipyard in Taiwan, and has a virtual forest of endangered wood below, according to many reviews.
The price is in your range.
Speed is not as fast as a Tartan, but we're happy with it.
Very easy to single-hand. My husband and I practice this often.
The motor is 55 HP Yanmar, which is enough for rough water.
The single head has a separate shower.
It is aft cockpit - this was one of our "musts" as well.
VERY comfy below. It will be our house.
NOT a pilot house.
2 double cabins, but only one head.
Full keel, which is essential for both going upwind, for any ocean sailing. It draws 6'6", but that works for us in the Chesapeake Bay.
The Mason is a really ocean-worthy boat. I would not settle for less weight.
We have a WONDERFUL broker named Tom Cooper, who works out of Seattle, at seacraft yacht sales (www.seacraft.com ). He is honest and low-key, and will find your perfect boat.

I’ve been wanting a small sailboat that has good performance but can also be dragged onto a beach at the end of the day. Trailerable would be acceptable, I’d mod the trailer to be self-powered so I can haul the boat up and down the beach. I’ve always enjoyed sailing in strong winds, so a wimpy boat won’t do. I’ve had an Island Packet in the past. Great boat but I’ll never again get a boat so huge that I need a boatyard. I’ve decided on a Precision boat because they’re small and well built. Do you suggest anything else?
