What is an equivalent of a Cessna 172 for other brands?
I'm getting ready to buy an hour builder, as i build hours before i go for an instrument and commercial rating. the most common plane you come across is a cessna 172. you can find em around for 25-50k for a decent enough plane, obviously nothing special in the 30k range, but still decent. anyways, what are other brands equivalents to this plane? what is the piper? beech? any others?
basically what i am trying to ask is, if you wanna buy a camaro, you could buy a mustang instead...same price range, they accomplish the same things, but they just look different..ect.... any help in this area would be great.
There were a lot of fixed gear four seaters, and a bit of misinformation has already popped up in this thread. The "big three" ( Piper, Beech, Cessna) all produced models:
Beech had the Musketeer line, also know as the Sport, Sundowner, and the retractable gear Sierra.
Cessna not only produced the 172, but also the 170 (the taildragger the 172 was based on), the 175 ( a 172 with a geared engine and a bit more power), but their real alternative to the 172 is the 177, known as the Cardinal. The Cardinal is high wing, like the 172, but a much sportier design.
Piper had the various four seat "short wing" models, including Pacers and Tri-Pacers, which were steel tube and fabric, before introducing the Cherokee line.
There are a couple of other lines that had some success.
The Grumman / American line includes the Tiger ( at 180 HP, NOT equivalent to the C182) and Cheetah - these are nice performing planes with a sliding canopy.
The Socata line includes the Tampico and Tobago- modern looking low wing designs with gull wing doors, a wide cabin, and great visibility, but a little on the slow side.
There are also some rarer birds out there (the North American Lark, Stinson's, Maules, etc)
