sport pontoon boats
Can pontoons be used in brackish rivers? Will wakes cause any difficulty?
Thinking of buying a boat but don't really know where to begin. Looking for something versatile that I can use in the river and in fresh water fishing spots. Buddy recommends a Flats boat or larger bass boat. He says I can use it in fresh water fishing spots and in the river. I want something that I can do a little recreation fishing with my father (I am not a sport fisherman) and something I can take the wife and dog out in to enjoy a day on the water. Any constructive advice is greatly appreciated. (Oh yea, I do plan on taking a boating safety course offered by the Coast Guard before making any purchases or hitting the water!)
I worked on a 40 foot tri-hull pontoon for nearly two years... a few words of advice...
If it's going to be left in the water, it will need a good hull paint below the waterline... true, you don't see aluminum cans with rust, but salt WILL definitely eat through aluminum (saw proof of that on another boat that was in dry dock when we went in for a new coat of paint). If it will be trailered when not in use, just be sure to give it a good rinse-down when you get it home (don't forget to flush your motor while you're at it)
As for boat wakes, pontoons are pretty darn stable when it comes down to it.
While flats and bass boats are nice, I think for an all-around recreation boat that you can fit all kinds of people in, you can't beat a pontoon... heck, ours only drafted about four to six inches even with a full load of passengers, so it's not like you can't get into shallow water with one... I'd go for it.
