I am looking into getting a Multi-Day Kayak?
I am trying to find a good kayak that I can use for Multi-day/camping trips but can handle up to class III waters as well as calmer waters. Any help or suggestions would be great. Thanks.
Some good suggestions but Perception doesn't make the Aquaterra kayaks anymore, though you may find a used one occassionally on Craigslist or Ebay. The Looksha's are nice boats -- don't know where you are located but I know of one for sale in SW Michigan for $600 right now.
You know, of course, that the features that make a boat good for touring (long, narrow, distinct keel) are kind of the opposite of what works best for white water (short, wide, round bottom) My experience has been that, though there are boats you can use for both, you are going to give up ease and speed on the flats and maneuverability in the rapids by trying to use a kayak for all purposes. That said, I have 4 kayaks and love my Venture Easky 15 LV(made by P & H) for most trips. At 15' it is long enough to track well, and has two nice sized sealed hatches for overnight gear. But being shorter than my other 18' sea kayaks, it is nimble enough for mild whitewater (Class I and II) especially with the snug cockpit and excellent thigh braces built in. It's good for someone up to about 5' 10" and 180 lbs -- above that you would use the standard Easky 15. I would not want to take it in Class III just because I think anything over 12' is a pain in that class. It's a reasonably priced kayak -- I think base is around $1000 though I got mine on sale for $700 about a year ago. I chose to not get the rudder but it comes all set up to easily add one later -- pin mounting and all the cable sleeves are all there.
We also own an Aquaterra Scimitar -- also a great all around boat but out of production.
