island packet sailboat
is a bavaria a good sailboat to cruise around the world?
What would be the best sailboat for its money to cruise around the world, something good but not crazy expensive.
Around 46ft is what i am thinking about, would like someone that knows sailboats to comment, ty.
Good but not expensive, that is like the pie chart thing. Bavaria makes a nice production vessel. $130k will get a nice used one at 32-46'.
But don't get stuck to one vessel until you know that vessel.
I have done some racing, some cruising and had a lot of fun. Never yet went full live-aboard, but I am only 50.
For a world cruiser you want amenities, live-aboard accommodations, and a proven vessel.
There are many, I am not going to advert for any company, I will suggest designs that are and have been proven to withstand ocean crossings, Ted Hood, William Lapworth, Carl Alberg, Halsey C. Herreshoff, Sparkman and Stephens, Kirby, Giles, and others.
Bruce Farr designed the Bavaria 34, 40 and others.
Bavaria is a good vessel underfoot and underway.
I prefer older vessels, Island Packet, Bristol, Westerly, Cal, and such.
46' is alot of boat, ALOT. It will cost about $10k a year to keep her in seasonal condition. That is just the hull and deck.
I hauled out my then 1976 SanJuan 24, haul out, bottom job other stuff and then back in was $5k.
The boat cost me less than that.
But that is boating, it is constant and vigilant care of the vessel that makes a safe and sturdy boat that I would trust in 12' seas.
Now if you are talking solo, think 32', that is alot of boat for one or even two to handle. And yes, many 32-34's have crossed oceans.
I am in no way trying to dispel any dream or ambition, in my years I have seen fools squander fortunes and seen wise people enjoying a life.
I hope that you sail into the second place there.
