Has anyone visited Cape Charles, Va is it a good beach there?
You're referring to Cape Charles, Va in the Chesapeake Bay area, right? I've driven through there a number of times while visiting a doctor friend in Nassawaddox, VA. and still think of Cape Charles as a little-known place so hope that's the one you're thinking of. I, too, would love to stay a few days there. However, it is pretty small, with one quite well-known inn, a number of newish coffee and sandwich shops springing up, little kind of hippie-ish charming shops-- it reminds me A LOT of now TEEMING beach areas like Nags Head, NC, but the way there were about 40 years ago (when I first went). Cape Charles is extremely picturesque, with very pretty summer cottages and Victorian homes that are in a state of being renovated-- the place has a great energy, like it's been rediscovered, but the tourist hordes haven't found it yet. I drove to the beach but didn't go out on it-- I suspect it's pretty nice. Our NC and VA beaches are all lovely-- sea oats, beautiful sand-- not so long ago you could spread out your towel and see other folks as only specks in the distance. So if you are used to a crowded beach, our beaches are lovely and feel private. Cape Charles struck me as a newly bustling spot of diversity, a little hippie-ish, young surfer types and older couples enjoying a quiet weekend. The air is clean, crisp-- just a GREAT ambience about the place. So YEAH, Cape Charles is a throwback and probably won't retain that 1940s charm for long. There were many little beach homes for sale in need of TLC, boy, how I wish I could buy one as well as lovely large Victorian homes-- As I understand it, it's a very welcoming place. I think pets are accepted, (now an issue on most NC beaches). I don't know what the surfing is like in Cape Charles, but I noticed a number of little surfboard shops, sailboat rentals-- I think bicycle or moped rentals (if they've gotten that organized). One good thing, if Cape Charles seems a little small after a day or so, just head towards another fine beach, like Ocracoke Island at the Outer Banks. Lighthouses, wild ponies, I don't think you'd be disappointed, though I haven't been THERE in ten years.
Cape Charles I just drove through last summer. If you want a calming place without a lot of people, and a gentle spirit, this could be it. Good luck!
