Looking for a good beginner kayak?
I just bought a house on the water, and figured i'd use this opportunity to start kayaking more. However, looking at kayaks, I realize that I have absolutely no idea what to look for! Can anyone give me a few ideas? I'm looking for something decent, but I'm also looking for something as cheap as possible!

It is non-commercial (costs nothing to sign up) and has great forums (under the "community" tab on the right of the home page) where you can get immediate advice on questions you might have. It also has guides for selecting a kayak and factory specs and user reviews for most of the hundreds of models available.
The basic things you need to take into account are
(1.) What kind of water do you plan to paddle? Flat slow rivers? White water? Open windy lakes? Coastal sea waters? Fishing? That will determine the basic model. For maneuverability in fast waters and rapids you need a shorter wider boat with a rounded or flat bottom. For more speed and better tracking in flat water a longer boat (13' to 18') with a vee shaped hull will be easier and faster. Though there are some "hybrids" that claim to be fine for both flatwater touring and whitewater, they are compromises that aren't really great for either sport. Most kayakers who like a variety of activities have different boats for each.
(2.) You body size will have a good deal to do with what model you buy. One size does NOT fit all. If you are too tall and heavy for a boat, it will ride too low in the water and be hard to handle. If it has TOO much volume it will be slow and balky.
(3.) Sit inside or sit on top? Sit on top kayaks are preferable for fishing and for warmer waters. One drawback is that they tend to be heavy, wide and slow. Most kayaks are traditional sit inside with a cockpit that allows your legs to be under the deck. This allows better control and also gives you a wider range of both safety and weather conditions.
(4.) Another aspect is safety. All kayaks should have either sealed fore and aft bulkheads (that keep the entire hull from flooding) or have inflatable flotation bags that fill the front and rear hull to keep water from sinking the boat, The kayak should also have deck rigging, non-stretch cord around the rim of the hull to help you get back in the boat in a capsize.
(5.) Realistically, budget can be a limiting factor. For a competent day touring or entry level whitewater boat plus safety gear (PFD, bilge pump, safety light, sprayskirt) and paddle (always get a good paddle, not an aluminum and plastic heavy piece of junk) you would need around $1000 to buy new. For beginners I recommend that you educate yourself about models that might suit your usage and then look for a used boat on Craigslist, You can get a used kayak with accessories for around $500.
The best source of education in what would work for you would be a good local outfitter. Try to find an independent shop rather than the big box chains (places like D1cks, Dunhams or Bass Pro don't typically have informed salespeople or a good range of boats.) Places near popular paddling locations may offer spring demo days where you can test paddle a range of kayaks and get good tips on selecting for fit and function.
It sounds like, living on a river, you may want one for casual day tripping, I would recommend a light touring or day touring kayak, sit inside with front and rear bulkheads and hatches, at least 12' but preferably 14' to 18' long. A longer boat will be faster and also enable you to padde upstream as well as downstream. There are a lot of cheap boats called "recreational kayaks" that are tempting for newbies, but these often turn out to be dissappointing. They tend to be wide and have huge gaping cockpits. They are more like rowboats to paddle, slow and bulky. And though people think a wide flat bottomed boat is "safer and stable" that is not at all true in rough water. If the wind comes up and the waves get substantial, such boats will flip far more easily than a narrower touring kayak, which will just cut through the waves. A few models you can look at to see what sort of design I mean are the Wilderness Systems Tsunami 140, the Venture Easky 15 and new Islay, the Perception Carolina and Conduit 13 and the Necky Eskia. All are similar -- my personal favorites are the Venture kayaks (we have two Easkys). A midsized plastic sit inside touring kayak like this will serve for a wide range of water conditions and will be a boat you will not quickly outgrow as your skill and fitness improves. I also highly recommend taking a beginner course in paddling technique and water safety. Kayak paddling is NOT intuitive and most people I see out doing it are doing it wrong (which is not only tiring but can lead to shoulder fatigue and wrist injury). A few lessons will greatly improve your enjoyment and help you choose the right boat as well as use it safely.

Yuehan, thanks for the compliments.First I think the bean-counting approach underestimates the power of political approach. Sure, by US standards China's navy is too weak to take Taiwan, but in the HanGuang exercise last year, they had the Chinese putting their troops on fishing boats. Too many unknowns. But you guys are right, sometimes I am just too pessimistic.Michael
Now thats COOL!! I remember years ago in Depoe Bay Or. they had a Humpback whale that would Bump the under side of fishing boats for fun. I had a friend who worked in the Coast Gaurd and told me of the time Humphrey Looked at everyone on the boat that was working on a bouy. When he flipped over and soiled the side of thier boat. My friend said that was the Foulest smelling crud he ever smelled. Not to mention they spent the next Day cleanning thier boat. I still tease him about getting Pood on by a whale.
I see what you are saying, but “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” by Katsushika Hokusai is a one of the most recognized paintings in the world and has become somewhat a symbol for Japan. It also has a strong place in Japanese/world pop culture. The painting suggests man’s strength to eventually overcome nature. Look at the fishing boats in the original painting and how they splits the waves. I would argue that people would love these became it reminds them the strength of Japanese culture. Plus, as someone has mentioned here, the original + these shoes are both based on okinami wave, which isn’t a tsunami.
The BBC got some pretty up close and personal shots. If are fishing boats … what the hell are they catching off the coast of Libya, Krakens?
