Breached hull and didn't sink?
So a couple years ago I was boating with some friends and (yes it was stupid) but we hit a large rock and began to take on water, quickly. We were in the ocean and made a run for shore a quick as we could. the boat was a 22' PARKER with an outboard. As we were about 1/2 way to shore the bulge compartment was full and began to run out the back of the boat. We ended up finding a lobster boat that we were able to tie up to. As soon as we did and stopped moving the deck flooded to about 3-4" of water but it didn't sink any farther. I was wondering why?? I heard that most boats now have foam or Styrofoam in the hull to prevent it from sinking completely, is this true? It would make sense in this case, just curious.
When we reached the harbor and pulled the boat out of the water, there was a 3" hole and a crack about 15-20" long. Did we just get luck or are these things designed not to sink unless a catastrophic failure occurs?
ever since the 1970's, USCG regs require boat builders to install enough floatation foam to keep a boat afloat and upright even when swamped.
