swan sailboat What type of boat would you recommend for a 30 yo guy maintaining as his primary residence for 6 months?
I've lived on a 46' sailboat growing up for a year and found it comfortable enough. I was small then though. I also have other residences around the area and an office where I spend most of my time. This would be for sleeping most nights during the summer. What do you recommend for minimum size for each: sailboat and power? What type of sailboat would you recommend. I've had recent experience on a Hunter, Benneteau, and Swan - obviously Swan's out of price range. I'd like to spend around $40 - $60k. Thanks for advice other than "don't live on a boat" - like I said I have other residences.
Your location would be helpful. The first obstacle is finding a suitable marina/slip. Then in today's economy, there are lots of Power boats (small yachts) on the market, often at bargain prices. Sailboats are fewer in number and command more reasonable pricing.
I'd recommend a 3855 Bayliner as the biggest bang for the buck.......with maybe some of the midsized Sea Rays if you want to spend your money. Both will still have value in a couple years. Older Sailboats like the Tartan 37 or Catalina 37 are good buys but a 38 Benneatu will work very well, and barely fit your budget. The advantage being they are holding their value better.
Many marinas do not allow houseboats, and restrict live-aboards. Regardless of your short term needs, i recommend a boat that's in running condition. It will have value as the economy rebounds.
