how much is insurance on sailboats
ok sailing folks..where can I get a list of safe harbors during hurricanes...particularly in SC?
I have a sailboat docked at hilton head , s.c. and the insurance co. wants to know if the dockage is considered a safe harbor
Go read " A Cruiser's Guide to Hurricane Survival" from Cruising Guide Publications..174 pages on how to survive a hurricane in a sailboat, at anchor or on the dock....and how to evaluate where you are
as far as insurance company wanting to know........you got it backward..the insurance company should tell you........there is no recognized Government list so the CG wont be any help........that says this harbor is safe.....be prepared for the ins. company to give you a hard time as to what "safe" is if you have to put in a claim........generally anyplace sheltered from wave action is a better bet than not.....if your marina has a wide open fetch for waves to build up and batter a boat, find somewhere else.......and in a direct hit by a major storm, like when Hugo went through SC in 87, all bets are off!

what do you think about buying a used sailboat that's from the 1970's or 80's around 20-30 ft for like $2-5k?
i've been looking at these used sailboats for cheap that may not have the best paint jobs but are still sailable. i have a few questions...
1. if i were to buy one how much would i have to spend to get it back into shape
2. how much do you think it would be annually for maintinance
3. would you recommend buying one if to own a sailboat is your dream and like projects
4. do think they are coast guard approved when there this old and sold at these prices
5. has anyone got experience with something like this
6. since these boats have been around longer then me, which have had the best reputations for longivity and quality
7. also what would you estimate the insurance to be?

These boats offer a sturdy hull and prove seaworthiness. Often to get more than your moneys worth, but it does cost to bring them back to like new condition. Look for one in good shape and you will avoid a lot of cost for things like running rigging. I've owned several now and love them. I recommend the 27 Pearson, or Cal's and the 27Catalina (if the price is right). Make sure that the engine if any runs. Now for your questions.

2. About $700 for haul outs and bottom painting, maintenance's.
3. Yes, see above
4. Yes, they want sound boats and these are proven.
5. Yes, there are quite a few still sailing on the Chesapeake bay.

7. Liability is $50 a year. There now worth hull insurance......(a few hundred a year if they pass survey.
