What outboard hp should I be looking to buy for my inflatable boat?
Hi Guys
I have a Saturn 16 foot inflatable boat.It is soft inflatable boat with 6 aluminum panel that you put together before you inflate it and makes it a nice one piece floor.Panels weigh 80 pounds altogether.The boat weighs 240 pounds.So we're talking about 400pounds with all the equipment for fishing.
I just wanna use it for fishing and easy driving NOTHING crazy.I'm not into speed and/ crazy driving.Just use it for fishing and pleasure.I don't want a lot of tension on transom.
I didn't want to get trolling motor since I live in Dana Point by the harbor and trolling motors for ocean and wind and... not a very smart choice.
What hp outboard do you guys think I should buy? any brands?
I thought 15hp would get the job done...what do you guys think?

Hey alex, gnome is right, the plackard (metal plate) on the transom (part where motor goes) will list the vin number, total weight, max weight, max number of persons, and max hp recomended.
for what you are doing id suggest a 9.9 short shaft or 8hp motor. They will be lighter than a 15 horse and generally easier to start. If money is not a huge problem you can go with an electric start option also. NEW prices will range from 1500-2500 depending on model and options or more 
look on craigslist for used options usually 500-1000 for a decent motor. If you are mechanically inclined you can shop around in the lower price ranges. Remember your boat is rubber! Wash it well after each use with approved soap for it if its pvc or hapalon!
Also will want a decent fuel tank, good hoses and fuel ball pump, life jackets, whistle, mirror, flare kit, dry box,patch kit, air pump, oars, and a handheld vhf radio is a good idea. (The life jackets, a paddle, whistle, and throwable floating seat cusion are minimum legal requirements) ALSO!!! If you run at NIGHT you must have navigation lights, there are stick on kinds for 25-50 bucks that use batteries like a flashlight.
If you go to west marine the attendant will help you find all you need, and since its a new boat to you, take your bill of sale or new title and you get a decent discount. (Compare prices, wall mart also carries everything you will need online and in most stores, but the attendants are usually worthless)
And dont forget fishing liscences and gear also at both mentioned stores. Last but not least a decent cooler and sun screen

Carl Safina's piece is great for information and images. Very educational, thank you. I will attempt to post it also, Kristy. His image of a dolphin coming up next to a fishing boat and blowing oil out of its blowhole is incredible. It sounds as if the dolphin was trying to communicate what had happened to it to the human species which is responsible.
you can get plans on the net for free just search u can find..but you can buy a small boat cheaper than you can build one
