Foot Crest
What does it mean when, during flooding, a river "crests" and reaches "flood stage"?
I just read an article about a river close to where I live. Because of all the rain we've had recently, this river "crested" at 61 feet. I don't quite understand what that means.
Usually river depth and "crest" are measured from the bottom of the river at some location, say a bridge, or a piling driven into the riverbed for this purpose.
Crest is the highest level the measurement reaches after it starts rising. Flood Stage is the depth at which the river begins to overflow its banks. The location of the bank is pretty arbitrary, but always defined so as to indicate that a higher water level will damage something.
