Do all civilian burials at sea require cremation?

Not at all.

We perform full body burials frequently at www.NewEnglandBurialsAtSea.com
-Capt Brad

For full body sea burials, we travel approximately 25 miles to sea for interment with a sea tribute service conducted by your funeral director of one that we can provide. Private cruise (4-6 hours+) Prices start at $7,500 in New England plus Atlantic Sea Burial Shroud which we developed and custom manufacture.

Full body burials at sea meet all required USCG safety regulations.

Full Body Burial at Sea Rates Include:

Use of the 65′, deep-sea-capable Arrow Yacht. All required USCG safety gear aboard. Full size bathrooms, generator for 110V for music and or video systems, beverages including beer / wine available on board.
Crew for accepting prepared shroud or casket (Strapped, drilled, weighted and identified from Funeral director).
Marine Grade Canvas Casket Cover to protect finish.
Overnight Crewman aboard, posted on watch near casket, prior to service leaving dock.
Morning departure is typical, travel 25+ miles to sea to 600′ of water, Captain’s service (up to 1 hour), travel back to Port.
All permitting with the EPA.
Fully insured by Funeral homes, Vessel insurance and operator’s liability insurance.

USCG Specifications for Full Body Burials at Sea:

A full body burial at sea requires an approximate 50 mile round trip due to the 600’ depth requirement of the EPA for casketed full body remains. (We have a long continental shelf in the North East and 600’ of water starts around 25 miles to sea.) Funeral director present is required.

This is almost a full day event due to the requirement to go so far off shore to get to 600′ of water.

These modifications to the casket would be performed in your funeral home prior to boarding:

Burial at sea of human remains that are not cremated shall take place at least 3 nautical miles from land and in water at least 600 feet deep. All necessary measures shall be taken to ensure that the remains sink to the bottom rapidly and permanently. Full Body burials require specific preparation for burial at sea by your funeral director, such as a weighted body bag, sailcloth, or specially converted coffins to insure either the body or coffin descends quickly. Special preparation requirements for full body burials such as metal caskets, banded, with twenty drilled 2” holes and 150 lbs of added weight to aid in the sinking of the casket. There are non toxic prep fluids available be sure to inqire with your funeral director.

Full Body (non-cremated) burials do require both a funeral director and a maritime funeral provider.

The EPA regulations for full body burials at sea require that the site of internment be three (3) nautical miles from land and at a depth of 600 feet. Locations in the northeastern United States, for example, may require travel in excess of 30 miles for a suitable site.

EPA Regulations 21-5.3 Burial at Sea:

21-5.3.1 The EPA has granted a general permit to transport human remains from any location for the purpose of burial at sea and to bury such remains at sea.

21-5.3.2 Human remains shall be prepared for burial at sea and be buried per Chapter 8 reference (c). (Report Symbol OPNAV 5090-9).

21-5.3.3 For non-cremated human remains, burial at sea shall take place no closer than 3 nm from U.S. land and 12 nm from foreign land and in water of no less than 100 fathoms (600 feet) depth. All necessary measures shall be taken to ensure that the encased remains sink to the bottom rapidly. For purposes of this paragraph, “land” means that portion of the baseline from which any territorial sea is measured (as provided for in the Convention on the Territorial Sea and the Contiguous Zone) that is in closest proximity to the proposed disposal site.

21-5.3.4 Cremated remains shall be buried in or on ocean waters without regard to the depth limitations specified above, provided that such burial take place no closer than 3 nm from U.S. land and 12 nm from foreign land. 21-6
