What exactly does it mean when a boat is said to have "soft spots?
What r soft spots? Are they on the floor/deck of the boat or on the hull?
In a wooden boat it means rotted wood. In a fiberglass boat first you should understand the construction methods. Fiberglass boats first were built using solid fiberglass. Well built boats back in the day had very thick hulls and poorly built boats had thinner hulls. It took some time for engineers to figure out what they needed as fiberglass was a new material for boat building. Then they realized that hulls could be made both stronger and lighter using a core material. Baltek (balsa wood) was one of the first materials used and is in use today. Foam is also used. The problem that arose was that as great as balsa is, when modifications are made to the boat that pierce through the hull or deck including the coring and they are done incorrectly allowing water to be absorbed by the balsa it rots. There is a soft spot when that happens. Care has to be taken to make the area watertight so this does not occur. This usually involves cutting the coring away from the area between the inner and outer fiberglass and filling with epoxy.
