best cruising sailboats
crossing the channel from uk to france in a 23-footer(sailboat)?
i am contemplating about crossing the channel from uk to france!
i have to ad that i am not very experienced. i have had limited coastal cruising. florida & s.california.
the sailboat is a small 23-foot/sloop, coastal cruiser with an 8hp outboard and located in fareham near portsmouth UK!
some detailed questions.
when is the best/safest time of the year to cross...
what is needed in means of permit/paperwork...(i am EU & US citizan)
where is a favorable location to cross,(considering the boat is in fareham) if any. by that i mean weather, seas, current/tide etc...
what do i have to expect once nearing the french coast(UK flag)...
any other helpful hints, advise, etc. are appreciated...

I would recommend early June as the best time, but not later than mid August, but there might be opportunities in late September. In the meantime do your home work. Take the boat out to gain experience. Watch weather forecast and marine observations. Go on line and check the details like wave height, wind directions, etc. You'll only need a valid Passport and registration for the boat. Little would be gained by moving the boat to another crossing point, You'd be across the channel quicker. When you arrive in France, contact the local harbor master by radio, or phone and he will give you directions to clear customs. I've sailed a 23' Kittiwake offshore, and it's a thrill. Good Luck!

Awesome Workout on your Sailboat
whats the smallest sailboat you would use for?
whats the smallest sailboat you would use to cruise around the world? i've been sailing lasers forever and now im wanting to within the next 6 years or before im 25 start sailing around the world...im really wanting to do it as cheaply as possible so i can spend my money on better things in other countries...basically here's what im wanting to do...me an my gf want to sail around there world while i compile a book about all the places and thing we see and experience we could work a little while in a few countries if we had to. what would be the best way to prepare for this? we both make ok money so don't think that should be too much of an issue
The short answer is The Biggest Keelboat You Can Afford.
Having said that, some boats are better than others. Boats designed for cruising comfort don't always make the best ocean boats. Do some research; there are tons of sites and owners' groups online for the many suitable blue-water boats.
Keelboat sailing is very different from dinghy sailing, and blue-water sailing is very different from sailing keelboats in sheltered water. I learned to sail on an O'Day Sprite (even smaller than the Laser), then graduated to keelboats at a club in Boston. Keelboats can be easier to sail from a technical perspective, but there is a lot more to coastal and ocean sailing than just the sailing part (ie: navigation, both coastal and celestial, foreign port protocol and requirements, safety equipment, storm tactics, etc). If you've never sailed keelboats, my recommendation would be to do what I did; join a sailing club and get certified, including advanced certifications like bare boat, celestial navigation, offshore passagemaking, etc. Both US Sailing and ASA have excellent programs, both for instruction and for certification, to ensure that you have the necessary knowledge and skills to survive the open ocean. Even if you are an expert sailor in the Laser, please don't assume that it is enough. Even though I know how to ski, it doesn't mean that I could survive a month in the Alaskan wilderness.
My wife (originally a non-sailor) wanted to do this very thing, and got mad at me when I insisted that she learn how to sail. She expected that I would do "the sailing stuff" and she would get to see the world. I explained to her that, while she didn't need to be as proficient as I am, she did need to be able to handle the boat in an emergency (I fall overboard, I get sick, I drop dead, etc). I know, it's selfish, but I want her to have the knowledge and skills necessary to save me.
I can recommend "Cruising Under Sail" by Eric Hiscock as an excellent reference, and there are many others. The bottom line is to be prepared, and that includes experience in a wide variety of conditions.
