how fast a 14ft alumum flat bottom boat can travel with a sears 3.5 hp engine?

what is the fuel and oil mixure ratio is? I just bought the motor off on ebay I paid $130. for the motor is that a good deal? it just needed carb and tank cleaned out.

Price wasnt bad as long as it runs well. The oil/gas ratio is probably around 1:50, but it would be best to find the original manual or a service manual for that engine. I would guess that the maximum speed would be about 10MPH, or 8-9 Knots. Flat bottom jons are limited on how fast they can go.

Should I buy the 11 ft cable for my boat?

My boat needs a steering cable. It was a project when I got it, but now it's turning into more of a headache than I bargained for...

What is the rule of thumb for measuring how many feet you need for a steering cable?

The boat is a 13 ft Bayliner and rough measurements (of the path the cable would take) are leaning towards 8 feet from the the motor to the steering wheel.

There is an 11 ft cable that I saw for really cheap on eBay. Would this work? And did I measure the distance correctly?

Thanks!
No, it did not come with a steering cable. If it had, I wouldn't be asking how to measure it!

Your measurement should be: from the helm to the gunnel, along the gunnel to the transom, and from the corner of the transom to the tilt tube on the outboard.

If that measures 8 feet, and 11' cable will not work. They are too stiff to coil to take up slack. Any sharp bends or coils will make the cable too hard to turn.

Keep looking for nothing longer than 9'.

The fun is just beginning. There’s no way that the Civil Service Commission is going to uphold this termination. Yelling at his subordinates – big deal. Worst case ,se nd him to anger management classes. Misspent the grant money – already suspended. Buying boat parts from his sister/brother-in-law – no evidence that there was anything done here that was illegal (kept the business in town, even had work done for free). Bottom line is the Civil Service Commission is going to side with the Chief on this, is going to recommend backpay, and the circus is just begining. The Civil Service Commission also has an axe to grind with the City of Methuen – Methuen (Manzi and his motley crue) had repeatedly thumbed their noses at the process, and knowingly tried to deceive the Commission on numerous hirings. Now, that chicken is coming home to roost…

Well maybe better to generate the question from what sparked the idea.

I was talking to my father about buying a boat. I have fond memories of fishing, camping, and traveling with my father. But, except for those few weeks a year, my father worked his tail off either in construction and then in the factory at a Ford plant. My mom worked very little on the earnings side. It was your traditional father works and mother stays at home and cares for the homestead situation. In contrast I am home with my daughter as much if not more then my wife on a weekly basis. I am often sent out on assignment for months at a time and my child see more of a single parent environment during those times. The neighbors see me more often then my wife walking with the baby. My sister-in-law made a half humorous comment that I should get a mothers day card as well. I wash laundry, love cooking, and have changed as many diapers as my wife. This couldn't be a more different set-up then the one I grew up under.

I guess by extension one could ask has the traditional roles of the family changed in the last couple of generations? We now have grandparents that act more like parents. Mothers that are more successful occupationally then the father. Work forces that require 24 hours staffing. An economy that requires most to have two incomes. Children that spend more waking time at school then they do interacting with their parents. Girls encouraged to take up traditionally masculine roles such as athletes and class leaders. What effects have these and many others caused?

Even when the structure is that of a “traditional family” has the actual meaning and expected outcome of that situation become a thing of the past?

Congrats on getting in. They haven't informed everyone who applied yet, since I haven't heard :) But here I think no news is pretty clearly bad news. I do wonder why it would take so long to send out a batch of “you didn't make it, thanks for trying” mails; I wonder if they're writing a personal note to all us losers with a comment or two on the stories, since they had to read them anyway and must have some notes?

Anyway, good job, carry on. I'm going to go bitterly write like hell all summer, get something published, and try to console myself by buying a boat with the money I won't spend going to SD.

Buying a boat is the cheatest part of owning one.

Pandabonium June 4, 2011 at 7:46 am

Productive weekend – seems like we seldom get done everything we plan, ah well.

Normally, I'd keep my thoughts to myself on the cat, but since you asked, here are my two yen on the topic.

First, I looked at the Iriquois link you provided. On the page that lists boats and owners I see a lot of them have capsized. I would look into that before buying a boat for crossing the ocean. There is a discussion of it here: The James Wharram Catamaran Forums – Stability

Secondly, IMHO the world's economic mess is not getting much better anytime soon and even if you are optimistic about it, I would council not to bet a big chunk of your savings on it. You may need that nest egg and if it is tied up in a boat it could take a long time to sell it and you may not get as much as you would like or need.

So, again, just my opinion, but I'd say pass on the cat and focus on making your boat as seaworthy, safe, and perhaps comfortable, as you can.

All the best.

What if the person building the boat has done all of the other things in addition? We shouldn't look and judge them, right? We don't know what is in their heart. Just because they are different than us, they may have earned a different reality than what we live, but it doesn't mean they don't have a fabulous relationship with God and great intentions through Christ in their hearts. The more money I EARN, the more money I am forced to pay in taxes, duh that is the system. But, also, what people don't realize is the More Money I Earn the More of It I give away to my top three charities, and then some to random others that pull my heart strings. When you work so hard, and made the right decisions, you've earned the right to play/reward yourself and your family. Also – that person buying the boat or whatever … what if the day before they funded an entire food bank for a year in North Detroit? Or, if they really make enough money to afford a custom yacht, they probably paid a shit load of taxes, a large percentage of which covers free services to those that can't afford them, welfare, medicaid, food stamps, clinics, libraries, city schools, government housing, prescription drug programs, rehab programs, legal services, etc. etc.
Just a thought to ponder …
