aluminum boat hulls
1975 j.c.penny boat motor 5.5 hp?
i took this motor out several times and i'm satisfied at it's performance. It's plenty for what i do in my 15 ft aluminum v-hull boat. runs great and pushes me fine. question:little screws that say fill and one that says vent next to the proppeller. What are these for and any info on how to maintain my motor propper would be very very apprieciated. long time fisherman but realshort time boater thanks
You received good and correct answers. But, in case it is a bit confusing, here is a step by step. Remove both screws, the fill and the vent ones, draining the gear case grease into a container to be recycled. Since your motor is 34 years old and you didn't know about this, I am assuming it would be a good idea to replace the fluid in case it is contaminated with water. Then, using a squeeze tube of 90 Wt gear lube, put the nipple into the bottom hole and squeeze the tube forcing the fluid in. When it begins to come out the top or vent hole, keep a little pressure on the squeeze tube while you screw in the top vent screw. Now, you remove the squeeze tube and replace the bottom screw, with only minimal grease coming back out because the vacuum created by replacing the top screw will retain most of the fluid. Check the fluid at least annually, and replace it any time it looks milky which indicates water has gotten in through a seal that leaks some. Welcome to boating. PS, it is a bit messy, have a catch basin underneath the motor skeg while you work and wear rubber gloves if you don't want your hands full of hypoid grease.
