Question about boats?
I'm interested in purchacing a boat, my parents had one when i was 5-8 years old and i loved it, now that im on my own i'd like to get my own.
But i have a few questions
How many hours is considered "low hours"
How big does it have to be so adults on board dont have to wear a life vest (washington and colorado)
i belive my parents owned a runabout, what are the different classes?
what kind of motor? (inboard/outboard/in-outboard), HP, 2 stroke or 4 stroke?
And how big of a boat can a mid sized v6 truck pull?
also, what brand of boat and what brand of motor is the best quality for the buck?

check your vehicle owners manual for towing capacity -- I know of very few v6 trucks that are less than 5000 lbs with frame-mounted receiver, and many are up to 3500 on the bumper. I mean a real truck (not a disguised car like the ford escape or lexus whatever SUV).
hours...I'd rather have an 8-year-old boat with 1000 hours than a 5-year-old boat with 200. sitting around is really tough on machinery and people who don't use their boats, probably don't do the maintenance.
If you're buying used, evaluate the condition it's in and don't worry about the hours. What I can tell you from experience about used outboards is, late-70's to 90's johnson/evinrudes are a general rule reliable and easy to maintain if you're the least bit handy (and you better be if you want to own a boat). but that all depends on how they've been maintained. parts are readily available.
most states don't require adults to wear their PFD's, but I'll let you do that research on your own.
"runabout" pretty much encompasses most of the 15 to 24 ft or so powered pleasure boats you see. You got your bowriders, cuddy cabins, center consoles. Tri-hull, tunnel hull, flat bottom, deep-V, semi-V, pad-V. And nowadays, the latest technology is stepped hulls and z-strakes.
Everything in boating is about trade-offs. For example, you give up speed to gain acceleration, or towing power. You give up vacation days to do boat maintenance. That sort of thing.
Trihull is old technology, stable but incredibly rough riding in any kind of chop.
Tunnell hull is great for fast running in shallow water (no kidding, full throttle in 10 inches or less), but not so great in rough water. Really better suited for river running or flats fishing.
Deep-V is smoother riding but slow to plane, requires more power than a boat with a better planing surface.
Semi-V which would be a hard-chine boat with very little deadrise at the stern. (means, at the a$$ end, the bottom is more or less flat.
Pad-V has a "pad" on the bottom at the back, kinda like a water ski, which the boat rides on when planing, and a cutaway transom that lets you lift the motor up high to reduce drag. It's how those bass boats manage 95+ mph. Prone to chine walk if you don't know what you're doing.
Stepped hulls are what master crafter and others are doing now, to get less hull in contact with the water, to gain speed. Quick to plane, but the step is only beneficial over a narrow range of speeds; above or below that range, its less efficient than other flatbottom designs.
