yamaha gp1200 waverunner
how do you wire up a starter relay on a 97 Yamaha Waverunner gp1200?
i bought a waverunner but the starter relay wasnt hoked up. The previous owner gave me a new relay but could not remember how it was hooked up
Well you're going to have the start button or key going to one pin of the coil winding. Depending on whether that voltage is a 12V or a return connection will determine whether you need 12V or GND on the other end of the coil winding. Once you've configured the switch portion of the relay you're ready to wire the contact side of the relay. Normally relays can't handle high currents so you'll probably have a solenoid to provide the high current at the starter. Normally the solenoid and the starter have their metal cases attached to each other and to the negative (GND) terminal of the battery. All you need to do is to close the solenoid, another SPST relay contact, and the starter will turn over and start the jet ski. You should be able to trace all of these wires using an ohmmeter or verify the voltages with a volt meter.
If you can't follow what I'm saying here I'd guess you're really not qualified to be making these repairs yourself. If all that's wrong is the relay, I'd suggest that you trace out and label the wires and where they go. Then bring it to a mechanic and ask for their help in hooking up the relay.
In all honesty though, I'd say you just bought a pig in a poke. Having the relay out was the sellers excuse for not starting the ski for you. My guess is that when you hook up the relay you will just be beginning to learn what's really wrong with this ski,
