What is the biggest yacht that only requires one crew member?
Choosing the right boat has a lot to do with your own size, health, and physical condition... almost as much as it has to do with the size, style, type, and layout of the boat itself. Some even 36' boats are impossible for one person to handle. Thinking "how large" will never get you away from the docks. Thinking small and simple, can get you around the world.
If you want a vessel you can take out and handle alone on most "normal" weather conditions... you are looking at 48 feet maximum (and that's stretching it). Smaller in fact would even be better, safer, and easier.
Now, I know some joker will come along and recommend a 100 footer but those that do, I guarantee you (sail or power) have never done it themselves. Yes, there have been some solo "non-stop" circumnavigations in 100 footers - but I guarantee you they have a "team of crew" at the docks.
I have always been a "big" boater, and have owned a live aboard size boat for the last 40 years. I have lived aboard full-time for the last 17 years... And I can't tell you how sad it is to see beautiful 36' to 50' boats sitting in their slips on days that God made for boaters... simply because the owners can not handle the vessels alone.
Layout is critically important. A 360 degree access to deck, dock, and dock lines - all on one level surface is a necessity for single handling.

PS. Being able to take your boat "out" alone, when other's can't go it alone, will quadruple the pleasure and the occassions you can use your boat. The trick here is to keep it as small as you can possibly live comfortably on, and keep it very simple.

YACHT - Summer Song
What Licenses/Certifications do I need to captain a private yacht?
It is an 85' Burger Motor Yacht, privately owned, 6 crew members, and used primarily for personal use. I don't know the GRT, but I assume it's under 100 tons, right?
Also any recommended courses i should look into? (CPR, Survival, Safety, etc..)
I'm planning on going in as a mate, but i want to be qualified as captain.

Look for links to Merchant Mariner's Documents and licensing. You will need to obtain a TWIC (Transportatation Worker's Identity Credential) too. You need a physical exam, a DOT drug screen, documentation of your sea experience, and take a written exam. Good luck!
