Inboard or Outboard? Pros and Cons?
Looking at buying a saltwater boat for recreational fishing and diving and Im leaning towards a inboard bayliner due to the ease and cost of mechanical repairs.
Are there any differences in how the get up out of the water? Performance etc
Pros or Cons would be helpful.
Thanks
Ok this is only my first week looking for a saltwater boat hence the question as Im trying to get as much info as possible before I make a purchase and Im just going by what Ive been told already.
Ive just sold my jetboat which ran a 383 s/b chev so Im used to that setup plus Im a mechanical engineer by trade so repairs arent a major or fuel. The bayliner seems to be a popular boat as I see them everywhere and If I was going outboard I think Id be going pontoon.
Again this is my first week looking.
Thanks
"Salesman" don't worry I didnt come down in the last shower, I take everything they say with a grain of salt if you know what I mean.
I do the reasearch so Im well informed before I buy.
What's your budget? Get the most boat for your budget. I own three boats. Two with I/O's and one with inboard engines. No real world advantage to either set ups. However, the inboard is a motor yacht for long distance cruising. The I/O's are more for sport.
I'm not a fan of Bayliner, but I have friends with them, and the newer boats are good boats especially the "Trophy"series (Blue-water boat). I'd recommend a Trophy for what you're looking to do. With an I/O, you really need to enter the water off the Port or Starboard sides of the boat. Jumping into the water from the stern you need to watch out for the outdrive.
My motor yacht has a hydraulic swim platform for ease of entry/exit for diving. We never have to worry about where the I/O is. Also, I had a compressor added to refill our dive tanks.
Performance wise, Twin engines are better than a single. If you plan on Offshore-Ocean boating, having two engines is better than one. Cost of maintenance is worlds more expensive for and inboard due to the haul-out cost if the boat isn't trailer-able. My I/O's average $600 per engine/drive unit. With an inboard, the engine is treated separate from the drive unit. There's the transmission, coupler, mechanical seal/packing seal, drive shaft, grounding connections(anti-corrosion), anodes and alignments. I/O's don't have that. It's treated as a single unit, so cost wise, an I/O is cheaper to maintain.
While I respect Capt. John and most of his answers, Bayliner seems to be a real "Anti-Christ" boat for him. Brunswick owns a lot more than just Bayliner. Some top brand boats are part of the Brunswick family. I own a Sea Ray Sundancer 260, a Brunswick family. MerCruiser is also owned by Brunswick, as is "Cummins Diesel Engines".
I would also recommend Seaswirl, Boston Whaler, Maxum and Wellcraft for your needs, but again it comes down to your budget and personal preferences.
