Are used Bayliner Boats a good buy? .?
I'm looking at spending about $7-8K on a used open bow. I've been told by someone to stay away from Bayliner but I see a lot of them on the water.
Smart to question as Bayliner has been the number one selling runabout and single engine cruiser for nearly 40 years, and its Bayliner 175, 185 and 195 dominate in their class. The Bayliner 185 is the best selling 18ft boat of all time, and prior to it, the Bayliner 1950 (older model) still holds the record for most boats sold of any boat model.
Bayliner offers affordability and family features, so most first time buyers are delighted, and many remain loyal Bayliner customers for decades. I was told in a Brunswick Sales meeting two years ago that the average boat buyer keeps his boat 2.5 years, but the avg Bayliner runabout customer keeps his 5 years and Cruiser customer 7 years, if that is an indicator of customer satisfaction.
To be truly helpful, may I suggest you use www.nadaguides.com to check the value of any used runabouts you find as a benchmark. Boats depreciate about 20% first year, about 15% second year and about 10% every year thereafter - so about 7 years or more to take a $20K boat to $8k on the average. You can research for example, a 2005 Bayliner 185 3.0L which was about $15K new and has a book value of cira $6 - $7K+ now, to narrow your search.
Also remember I/O stern drive "service cycles" as older OMC Stringer Drives, Cobra, and AQ Volvo's (Force Outboards have not been produced since 1999) are past their prime and will become high maintenance by now, so you are looking for a Mercruiser or Volvo SX of newer vintage.
Additional Cost Benchmarks you will also want to take into consideration - Every 3-4 years your boat should have a new water pump impeller, every 4 years a new battery, circa 10-15 years new bellows and other associated drive rubber, every 4-6 years trailers need new tires from oxidation.
Lastly, definitely walk around the floor of your prospective boat with hard-heeled shoes to isolate any "soft spots" that can be costly floor repair from a boat left in the weather too long, which allows the treated plywood to delaminate. Bayliner, since 1993 has molded its I/O engine cutouts to prevent Transom delamination from the public allowing the boat to fill with 8" of water and spill over into the transom cutout-and for a decade it was a Bayliner-only feature. Also around 1993, Bayliner added vinylester to their runabouts to prevent osmosis blistering, a feature most other brands never offered, except brands like Cobalt. So Bayliner has really been quite an impressive company since 1990's particularly 1993 and newer. They even have a public website for parts look up to make owning an older Bayliner to 1991 a real delight - www.baylinerparts.com
