Mercruiser Outdrive - Broken fin on lower unit.?
I hit a large submerged rock and damaged the prop and broke about 2 1/2" off of the lower fin on the outdrive of my 1989 Wellcraft Eclipse 186 that has a 165Hp motor and a Mercruiser Outdrive. . Does this have to be repaired of can I just grind it smooth? Will it have any effect on the handling of the boat? Does anyone know what the standard prop was on this outdrive. The only numbers I can see on the prop are D856. I'd appreciate any help. I believe I registered properly but would you pleae forward your answer to wincue@alltel.net. Thanks
Mercury Marine sells replacement skegs that a welding shop can weld into place. It is a high speed rudder. Without it you will decrease the steering ability at higher speeds.
Next thing to worry about is there any damage to the drive internally. A service shop can measure the runout on the propshaft, if it is more than .010 out, you need to have it replaced. If you have insurance, most policy's will cover the damage.
I can't find any info on your prop, as Link said, use the Mercury prop selector.
