where are good places to go on a road trip?
Texas; it has Gulf coast beaches, deserts, the Hill Country with towns like Boerne, Bandera, they are like the Old West, but real, right down to horses in front of diners, not a tourist show; and if you like WWII South Pacific history the Nimitz museum in Fredericksburg is a must see, plus in the southeast part of the state are the beautiful mountains of Big Bend National Park, rivers to tube and drive-through wildlife parks. Dinosaur Valley State Park [south of Glen Rose] in Texas, has actual footprints in the riverbed. Fossil Rim has tree houses so you can spend a night w/animals roaming below. Instead of an expensive Resort for vacation try Galveston.

North Carolina has the awesome Atlantic beaches of Cape Hatteras where there are over 1,800 charted shipwrecks, some on the over 50 miles of beach, 100's in less than 30' of water [scuba distance], there is good Sport & Shark fishing as well as excellent surfing, the sound side is great for Waverunners & Wind-surfing, classes w/equipment are available.
Or
Black hills of South Dakota, be sure to do the Badlands loop, pan for gold, see Custer State Park, with wildlife loop & go to Mount Rushmore.
Be forewarned that some states, like Kansas or Iowa are just huge, flat, farms, stretching for hundreds of miles. Also, don't waste your time with tourist traps like Disney World or 6-Flags, their just expensive amusement parks. That is why I would not suggest Florida, it is overrun with that type of thing.
