First time ever using tampons?
Im 20 years old. I've never used tampons before. Couldn't stomach the shame or the thought.
but..when my body decided last night to ruin, A WEEK LATE, my only five days off out of the entire summer, I had to try.
for my trip, im going to the lake. This is not a gross in out of the water lake. I swim constantly. When I am out, im around a bunch of people I know. Including guys. I also wakeboard. HIGH HIGH HIGH IMPACT and cliff dive and go tubing. This is the last thing I wanted.
I put a tampon in this morning. I have questions and no one to ask. Do I have to worry about it leaking? do I have to wear a pad with it too? Do you worry about it falling out, or people seeing the string? Can you pee with one in, and not mess it up? Can I swim, get out get in the boat on the white seats, get back in the water, etc with it in? Can I wakeboard and waterski in tampons?
Last question..I know its not jaws..but there are large predatory fish in this lake. Do I have to worry?
I'm going to be blunt and detailed -- you've got legitimate questions and I wish someone had told me all this back when I was a teen and first started using them. They will transform your life and you can do anything using them.
First off, be sure you have the tampon in right. If it is seated correctly you should not be able to feel it at all. If you can sense that it is in there, it is not in far enough. You may have to squat on the floor while inserting it to make sure it goes all the way -- when it can't go any farther, you are in the right place (it can't go past the cervix into the womb because that opening is too tiny, so it can't go in "too far.") Once it is in place, the string should only be a couple of inches out -- the chances of anyone seeing it are slim -- if you are worried in a swimsuit, just cut the excess off with a scissors -- you will still be able to reach the remaing couple of inches inside to pull it out.
If it seems hard to pull out, ever, just relax your muscles as much as possible. Squatting helps, also pressing down like you were taking a dump (sorry, no better way to describe that). Your urethra is in a totally different body orifice and has no effect on the tampon -- it is a tube above the vaginal opening and they are NOT connected. If the tampon feels like it is slipping while you pee you probably did not put it in far enough. Pull it out and install a new one.
For outdoor activities I recommend Playtex brand over Tampax because it expands side to side and is less likely to leak. Yes, they will leak if you leave them in too long and have a really heavy flow. The Playtex Supers are extremely absorbent and what I preferred for active sports. Plan to change the tampon every 4 to 6 hours and also every time after you have been swimming..
Tip: taking the over the counter pain pill Alleve will make your period lighter and shorter (it is what is called a prostaglandin inhibitor -- my gynecologist told me to take it for heavy flow and it works, with no side effects. Ask your own doc if you are concerned.)
If you are swimming, be sure to change the tampon as soon as you can afterwards. I never had one leak while swimming, kayaking or scuba diving, but they do eventually absorb some water and you don't want that hanging around inside of you for long. When you are in water, your flow tends to slow down or stop anyway due to the lower body temperature from being immersed. And fish will not be attracted to you, trust me, In fact, since it is bacteria that are exposed to air that create the funky smell from pads, that does not happen with tampons -- they are way more sanitary and undetectable. I never got any sort of infection from being underwater using them , and that was over almost 40 years of tampon usage, frequently doing strenuous activities. I even worked construction for 7 years using them.
You do need to keep track and take out the last one when your period is over. Easy to forget.
Honestly, once you get the hang of tampons you will be so happy and feel so free. Whovever invented the tampon should have been sainted and gotten the Nobel Prize. It almost makes having a period seem like nothing at all.
Until you get the hang of using them, I would avoid white shorts and light colored swimsuits and undies. Once you've figured out which brands and absorbencies work for you, you will be able to trust them more. Adding a pantiliner or minipad for backup on the first day or two of your period is good insurance (not when swimming, obviously).
