What would be a good used type of boat for a first timer?
We are leaning towards an old yacht, but we have never bought a boat before and we have heard about the horrible mpg on yachts. What would be an expected mpg on a 10 year old carver yacht. And what recommendations do u have for a first time used boat

A smart first time boat buyer, will make absolutely sure, his first boat fits well within his lifestyle, philosophy, and pocketbook. Of these three, busting the on-going monthly budget is where most first timers end up in trouble. No boater's wife is going to be happy with a boat that ends up being a strain on the household budget.
A great first time boat in the style you want, seems to be a minimum of 26' to a maximum of about the 32 foot range. (Remember - your 'on-going' monthly expenses - from dock fees, lines, fuel, maintenance, paint, parts, repairs, labor, etc.- increases proportionately with the length of your boat.)
My suggestion (if you are at all concerned with fuel cost) would be to go with an outboard or an I/O (inboard/outboard). The reason for this is fuel economy, and maneuverability. As single inboard engine vessels are rudder controlled and can be difficult to maneuver in and out of docks. Twin engines (while fantastic to maneuver) are twice the fuel, twice the maintenance, twice the complications, twice the trouble, and twice the expense.
Now, my strongest suggestion to a first time boat buyer of this size and expense is: Use the services of a 'Certified Boat Broker'. These guys know boats. They know what to look for, both good and bad. If you have a personal relationship with your Banker, ask him to refer you to a Certified Boat Broker. If not, visit a few and 'interview' them. Pick one you feel comfortable with. They will (or should) ask you a hundred questions, and they will find you what you want in a 'good' solid, safe, ready to go, used boat. These guys work on a commission basis, but they work for you, and they earn their money by looking after 'your' interests. They also know boat values. Usually what you pay in commission, they same you more then that in price.
If you don't use a Certified Boat Broker - you need to make sure you get a satisfactory 'Certified Boat Survey' on any boat before you buy it. In some cases, a Certified Survey may already be available, if not - make sure you get one before you turn over any money.
I have made a few deals with private sellers, by asking them to pay for a Certified Survey, (it's not cheap) and letting them know if the boat 'passes' to my satisfaction, I will buy the boat and pay for the survey. If it doesn't pass to my satisfaction, they will pay for it, and we will re-negotiate the deal based on the Survey and cost of repairing or replacing whatever to my satisfaction. . . A certified survey is a very detailed report by a professional, that will tell you everything right, wrong, and about to go wrong - on the boat you are about to buy. . . - I have witnessed more then one deal, where the seller actually had no idea something serious was wrong with his boat. So don't, under any circumstances, take their word for it without verifying it. (As Reagan used to say " Trust, but verify.)
Here are two questions to ask yourself when making the decision to get a Certified Boat Survey:
1. If I bought the boat, took it out and it sank, or the engine blew up. Would I laugh or cry?
If the answer is cry - get a boat survey.
2. Is the safety of my wife, kids, friends, dependent on the seaworthiness of this vessel?
If the answer is yes - get a boat survey.
In closing - Carvers are great boats. But even a new great boat can have something seriously wrong. So don't base your decision solely on the Mfg reputation, base it on the individual boat, and the use of a Certified Broker, and a Certified Survey will prove you are making a 'smart' boat buying decision.
Meantime, go climb in and on every single boat you possibly can. Look at everything, and keep an open mind with your eyes wide open.

You can look up current boat values in your area using this guide. As a footnote, boat dealers use the lowest number as a maximum "trade-in value", and sell (or try to sell) at the highest number. So you want to make a deal at or below the lower number, or at least very close to it.
