Elliptical Wings: Could a large aircraft (737 size) be designed to use a truly elliptical wing?
I am aware of winglets and other devices used to create elliptical wing characteristics, but I was wondering if it would be possible to design something like a 737 size aircraft (100-120 ft length) using a truly elliptical wing, or possibly doing the same with a large turboprop, also in the 100+ ft range. I am thinking twin engine which offers the option of a tail mounted engine, at least with the jet version.
Why would I ask such a question? For reasons of fuel efficiency.
Surprisingly, elliptical wings have been used on a larger aircraft than a Boeing 737. In the late 1960's, the USAF produced a C-141 Starlifter prototype which had an elliptical wing with a wingspan of 148ft. This aircraft remained in service as an experimental aircraft from 1969-1970.
As you say, the elliptical wing minimizes drag by improving aerodynamics, but on an aircraft this great a scale, it has little effect on the efficiency.
The programme was terminated in 1970, and the C-141 Starlifter was converted back to the regular planform for the following reasons:
-Aerodynamic benefit was minimal
-Costly to manufacture.
-The wing became unstable at speeds above 320mph and manouverability was poor.
-Stalls became frequent.

How would the twin towers have faired if the airplanes were flying a lot slower?
How would the twin towers have faired if the airplanes were flying a lot slower? Like, if the planes were the same design but only had propellers instead of jet engines. Would the outcome have been the same or different?
One study using computer simulations determined that a speed of less than 130 meters per second (291 mph) would not be enough to break through the outer section of beams.
It is likely that if a large plane were powered by propellers, it would not have enough velocity in level flight to break through. However, the pilot could perform a dive to increase speed.

Ok, 2:30ish this afternoon, what was that commercial twin engine jet (or luxury liner) doing so low sweeping south to north over The Mount? That was just way too low for such a large jet.
