Tugboat Ocean
Why does a boat being pulled up a river sink if the hole in it's hull is sealed?
suppose a damaged ship just barely floats in the ocean after a hole in its hull has been sealed. It is pulled by a tugboat toward shore and into a river, heading toward a drydock. As it is pulled up the river it sinks. Why?
1 cubic foot of fresh water weights 62.38 lbs
1 cubic foot of salt water weights between 63.6 and 64.3
Salt water will float a heavier object in a 1 cubic foot container.
Add the extra weight of the salt water into the boat and the lower carrying capacity of fresh water, the boat will sink. however, once the saltwater has been diluted or replaced with fresh, it may come back to neutral buoyancy.
