Towing Vessel
Presidentials:: Is help from a commercial marine rescue company, like seeing a mortician for medical help....?
Here's a question you won't see a presidential candidate answer.
Marine commercial rescue companies have more to gain from claiming salvage rights to your recreational boat, than they do from the towing fees. Current Coast Guard practices and salvage laws allow companies to be summoned by the coast guard, in order to rescue disabled vessels. The towing fees are nominal, but they can claim up to 80% of the value of the "sunken" vessel. To be "sunken" the skipper/owner has to abandon it. By delaying the rescue and not providing pumps for the disabled vessel, these comapanies can virtually insure themselves of the huge salvage rights claims.
In anchorage areas if an anchor drifts they will also claim salvage rights to the vessel.
So calling a commercial salvage company is like calling a mortician. Do we expect them to help save a vessel when it's not in their best interest to do so?
