Good point. Looking from where we began, we see our original intentions and what influenced us to begin such a path. Bringing us insight into our current state of affairs, we may critically wonder: “Are we pushing against a wall? Are we treading in open water when there's a pontoon boat to our right?”

Also, you can ask almost any harbormaster if there are any abandoned boats he wants to get rid of. A friend of mine got a 15 years old pontoon boat for free that way. It needed all new wood, was abandoned and no slip rent was paid on it for for 10 years. The rental manager was happy to see it go. Just a thought for a project on the cheap.

I’m 37 this year (prefacing that so that I can prove I remember the 70s). My dad is a professional, in that he went to college and doesn’t have to build anything. However, his job is pretty traditional middle-class fare. Nowadays, though, people doing that job, and not having 30+ years of experience and running their own office, cannot live the way we did when I was growing up. In 1983, when my dad was 37 and I was in 3rd grade, we were already in our second house with a big yard, had two boats (a pontoon boat and a sailboat), a truck to pull them, a Suburban for road trips, and my dad’s car for work. I think it was about then that they bought their first rental property as a tax shelter. That year they took us to Cozumel (just as the tourist business was starting up–it was a lovely little town then; I was aghast a few years ago when I went and saw what it has become) for a week, and I think we’d already been to Disneyland once by then (California is a long way away). I look at that stuff now, and think, “No frickin’ way.” I am better educated that my parents, and I have a very well-paying job. But there is no way I’m ever going to be able to live like that (that’s fine with me, actually; I like my lifestyle a lot). Now, I’m in a very different line of work than my dad, so let’s compare apples to apples: The guys my dad employs–these guys would have been him in those days–make shit. And that’s from my dad, who pays over scale, because he doesn’t like turnover. They (and my dad) do way more work for way less money. I could not live the way I do on what my dad pays. Now, my dad is still the owner and makes a lot… lot… more than I do now, but in 1983 dollars, I bet we’re about the same. Someone below me is saying “yeah, but they had 20+ years to make that”–and that’s something my mom would say. Unfortunately, my mom is a liar, and doesn’t want to admit that her son is the age she was when that son was a few years into grade school (and is childless–kinda missed the biological boat waiting to not be in massive debt and with no idea how long any job would last). It’s just plain true. People used to have more discretionary income than they do now. I grew up going up to the mountains to go sailing (sailing was a big part of my childhood obviously) once a year, going up again in the winter for a long-weekend ski trip in a cabin, going up again in the summer for a long-weekend hiking trip, taking the boat out to the local reservoir every weekend of the summer after church, and going on at least one really big, at-least-one-week trip every year. Now, not only could I not afford to do any of those things, where the hell would I get the time? Elizabeth Warren has a lot to say about all these things, and the numbers to prove it. We’re just not really living as well as our parents by any metric.

this is a common type of question on yahoo answers, and it only really has one answer.
one that those asking it never like…….

even if you are able to build a quality and reliable boat yourself, of any type, it will cost you MORE then just buying one will.
the reason is rather simple, those companies who make boats make a LOT of boats. they buy everything in BULK at prices far lower then you will pay.

the cheapest way to have a reliable and safe boat is to just buy one built by those who know what they are doing.
