Ideal jet intake height for riverboat?
I have a late sixties Starcraft V5 aluminum 14'6" runabout, mid eighties Merc.75hp outboard with San-Leadro jet. How far above the bottom of the transom should the jet intake plate be when trim all the way down? the boat is rated for 55 hp, outboards lose about 30% of the hp rating when conv. to jet drive(about 52.5hp remains)

The use of GPS Course Over Ground (COG) is a highly inaccurate method of determining deviation. COG is the vector sum of course being steered, wind and tide or ocean current. A better method is to choose a distant visible landmark, set it in as a temporary waypoint in the GPS and point the bow at the land mark. Note the difference between compass and GPS. This is deviation. Do this with enough points and you can construct a reasonable deviation table. Better yet, hire a compass adjuster to do the work for you and adjust out the deviation in the process. In a wood, fiberglass or aluminum boat, a competent adjuster can get all deviations below 2 degrees. For practical purposes this is nill with a typical 5 degree graduation compass dial.
Another story about Dad is his love of fishing. He had an aluminum boat, that was not too hard to handle. One year he had an accident on his painting job at Ore-Ida. He was up on a ladder painting on a door, when some driver came out through the door and knocked Dad off the ladder. He broke some bones in his foot. Did that stop him from going fishing ? No way, he was on crutches, but still went fishing and caught about 10 large fish. Have you seen the picture?
If not, I will send it to anyone who would like to see it. We had so many enjoyable fishing trips. That is one of my favorite memories from my childhood. Thanks, Mom and Dad for those wonderful memories.
