Since were coming out of the medieval ice age, isn't the 2-3 degrees/century from that.?
Did someone record the effects of this natural phenomena as being 2-3 per century.
Then politicians and businesses who didn't wan to tell people to stop driving cars, and turning the peripheral rural lands into the new suburbs decide to use this low figure.
How much is the most liberal (not on a political scale) estimate
I guess you just can't win; I posted a similar question of the Obama website, without preference to either conclusion, or everyone assumed that I meant there was no man-made global warming and disliked it.
I make it clear that I do believe in manmade Global warming, and I get allot of people who say the reason why the North East went from being covered by snow for 4-months strait to no more than 1-2 weeks strait besides snow banks within my lifetime, is that in the last 120yrs, its risen anywhere between 1f. and 1c.
I assume you mean the little ice age? or possibly the Iron Age Cold period???
The warming trend from the little iceage is 0.5 degrees c per centuary, this has remained almost the same this centuary (0.6 this centuary) but has been elevated due to a warm PDO cycle.
Dana points out that solar output remained consistant for 60 years, but forgets to mention it was at a constantly elevated level, the highest of the last 850 - 11,700 years depending on which study you look at (IPCC AR4, 2007).
Like water in a pan, if the input of energy is elevated but at a constant level, the water will not immediately rise to that tempetature, but will instead warm slowly until equilibrium is reached. Alarmists fail to understand this simple effect caused by the sea, as it warms from the enhanced solar energy to reach equilibrium. This effect brought us back out of the little ice age as solar activity rose to a high level.
The majority of studies show the Medieval Warm Period (MWP) was warmer than today, around 0.7 degrees based on the mean of the 300 odd studies that support it. The IPCC show that at this time solar output was elevated and thus caused this warmer period. This centuary solar output has been slightly higher than during the MWP (IPCC AR4 2007), basic logic would suggest that the earth should then warm to a similar temperature to the MWP, this is of course hindered due to the Little Iceage (LIA) which was triggered by low solar activity, which meant the warming started with a cool sea. Should solar output have remained constant this centuary, the sea would continue to warm until some kind of balance is found. The NOAA paper in my source below shows that when SST is input into climate models similar warming is acheived whether co2 is included or not, hence SST (sea temperatures) is key to our climate and responsible for most of the observed warming and rise in co2. This is known as the hot water bottle effect, which intern controls the greenhouse effect and gives us our moderated climate. This is the mode in which the sun has naturally influenced climate through the earths history and was very much still occuring during the LIA and the recovery.
People probably assume your a skeptic as your question asked what caused this "natural" event, and the fact you asked meant you havent swollowed your co2 pills and dont automatically blame manmade co2.
Asking questions is healthy and should be encouraged as should all views on climate change.
