cost to maintain a boat?
I hate saying this. . . but it depends on the boat, size, type, engine(s) and amenities. Some are fairly cheap, others can be extremely expensive.
In addition, these days with many power boats - it is fuel that busts the budget.
Sailboats (in my opinion) are the very cheapest to own and operate. Fuel for their small auxiliary engines is pretty insignificant. On the opposite end of the 'frugal' spectrum - are your twin engine cruisers and powerboats which can easily burn up $300 or more a day in fuel for fun.
If you are buying new - then you have the same Insurance costs as you do with a new car. As far "maintenance" in terms of mechanical up keep - it is normally around $500 a year if you are paying someone to do all the work. Then, depending on the size of your boat, (if it is too big to trailer) you may have slip or dock fees, haul out fees, winter storage fees, etc, which can be several thousand dollars a year.
For a better idea of cost, you need to give more information on what kind and size boat you want, or have, and how you are going to use it and where you are going to keep it when not in use.
