Do you need a mooring or beth for boat in Spain?
I'm moving to the Costa Del Sol next year, and I'm looking at buying a small boat. However, I'm unsure on the best and/or most cost effective solution for where to... well er.... park it! Do I need to acquire a mooring or berth either by purchase or renting, or is there another way?
Can I leave the boat out at sea, and use a dingy to get to land? Or would this incur a fine?
I'm hoping to learn all of this when I move out there after taking the necessary course to be safe at sea, but could any boating people out there advise me on the cheapest way of keeping a boat on the water, preferably someone with knowledge of Spanish boating laws.

If you tie up to a post in the bay if posts are provided or off the harbour entrance where there are sometimes post moorings to supplement the the landing moorings it costs you but a bit less than tying up alongside the harbour wall on a fixed berth with all nice steps and iron rings and pollards and other boaty marine stuff or in a big or small posh marina with pontoons to tie up to where the price is normally even higher
If you just drop anchor in the bay and row ashore you can leave the boat there for a reasonable time, a few days in some places, but you can't do that as a permanent way to get a free mooring.
It's a touring facility allowing people to come ashore for a rest or provisions or for sightseeing but it's not a free home for a boat unless you live on the boat and spend all your days touring.
In that case the boat is your registered address so you have the accommodation laws to comply with and if you can get through that in Spanish maybe you're good at Serbo-Croat and Ancient Greek philosophy as well.
It's like parking a car or a truck in a lay by......that's the bay for a boat. No return after 'x' hours, maximum stay 'y' hours but some are pretty open about the legal stuff and the truck drivers know those so they stop in those overnight to kip.
Next morning though they've gone.
A camper van owner using one as a permanent park will soon be noticed by the fuzz and get moved on and a permanently parked boat will get a visit from the local harbourmaster's staff or the customs men or both whether in Spain or GB or lovely Slovenia or Samoa.
Like cars, getting a free park for a boat can take a long time to find.
Still, never mind. At least you'll be all skippery and awash with warm water there instead of cold water.
You can do a course in Britain organised by the Royal Yachting Association...RYA.
The Queen doesn't actually do any of the lectures but some some real good guys and gals do....all the way from level 1 (an A Helm in dingy sailing which 15 year old's can do) to world class top international sailing competition skills and drills, and all the extras like specialised radio courses on top of the basic radio you get on a normal course if you're doing a day skipper or offshore course.
The RYA is a top dog in top dog country...or seas and lakes.
The courses and certificates are internationally recognised and you can start on your local lake ( hundreds in UK, all over) or river (nice on the Thames by Reading or Maidenhead).
Of course that's if there's a sailing club so if there is then by early next year you'll be on a B Helm and when you get to rainy Spain ( chucking it down in Marbella last visit. The steep road down from town to the beach was a waterfall) you'll already be able to talk the talk and maybe get a local course in Spanish waters or you could do a day skipper's course from scratch in UK, in English which helps if you don't have fluent Spanish.

The CdS is a bit pricey like most of Spain for boats but it has some very good marinas and brilliant sailing.
The word 'tariff' comes from the gorgeous little Tarifa on the south west tip of Spain, because way way back when the Med was a big trading sea. it was the first port to charge incoming merchant ships to berth, thereby taxing imports.
Hence a charge on something is now called a tarif and guess what?
Oh, you know now...it was a charge on boats. In Spain.
Nuff said.
Valencia is good.......Valencia is really good. That's why the Americas Cup races got centred there....
Valencia is a Paradise. It's good. It's yummy. And it's cheaper than UK.
And it's got gorgeous botanical gardens and terrific architecture and fabulous clubs but if you want to keep a boat there it's like the rest of the south coast of Spain...money money money, just like good ol' Britain.
