Would it be bad luck to name by boat John?
If I have a sailboat that I only sail on Lake water, would it be bad luck to name her John? Specifically, John B. The name comes from the song Sloop John B by the Beach Boys. It is my favorite song. A sloop is a sailboat.
They say you have to name your boat after a woman or else it is bad luck, but there are plenty of boats still afloat that are named after stupid things.

On a sailboat what is the difference between a cat -rig and a sloop?
Which one would be better for a smaller boat, in a lighter wind area?
A sloop has it's single mast just a foot or two forward of mid-way, or middle of the boat. A cat-rigged sailboat, is a single mast carried well forward near the front of the boat, and a gaff-rigged sail.
In addition, a cat-rigged sailboat has a wider beam (usually about half the length of the boat) and a centerboard. A true catboat or cat-rigged sailboat does not have any sort of a bowsprit and therefore can not carry a jib.
The sloop is the overall easiest to sail... The catboat, with it's gaff-rig requires two halyards and often two topping lifts. The weight of the gaff spar (at the top of the sail) high in the rigging is very undesirable for most sailors - as the gaff must slide down the mast, and therefore prevents any stays from bracing the mast. This usually makes the rig itself very heavy and thus requires more ballast.
Which is better in lighter winds? The sloop. The sloop will carry almost any arrangement of sails and more of them at once. In addition (FYI) historically, the sloop has consistently held 90% of all mono hull speed records, and currently is the only mono hull in the top 12 sailing speed records.
The sloop is just very simple to understand, and very simple to sail. It is also the most forgiving of mistakes. However, a small "catamaran" (not to be confused with catboat or cat-rigged sailboat) is better still as it is 2, 3 even 4 times faster then a monohull of equal length - much faster and much more fun in all kinds of wind - especially light winds.
