How much does it cost to built 14m yacht or motorboat?
I want to know the estimate figure of the raw materials and stuff needed for this. The job cost would be an advantage as well so I would have a clue what is the difference between producing the yacht or boat and the final selling price.
I am at the final stages (finishing touches) of building a 44' (13.47m) catamaran. It has been a 6 year project for me. I admit however, I have not given up as much of my voyaging/sailing time as I probably should have... and had I done so, I would probably have finished this project within 3 years.
Now, let me say this... In my opinion, there is a mighty big financial difference in a "yacht" vs a powerboat, or a "yacht" vs a motorboat, or "yacht" and a sailboat. So, when you mention "yacht or motorboat" - Well, I just have no idea what you want to build.
I built a 44' boat - a catamaran - NOT a "yacht" by any stretch of one's imagination. My vessel is handsome, sleek, and extremely comfortable - but there is not one bit of "luxury or luxurious appointments" in it, or on it. Which in my own mind's dictionary, is the difference in a yacht and a boat.
For my application for home-built hull numbers, and registration, I turned in $112,000 worth of receipts on all my materials. So, that is what is cost me (within a hundred dollars or so of lost receipts) for the materials to build my boat.
Had it been a "yacht", I would have easily tripled that number simply by using all teak where I used some, and all mahagonny where I used little. $1,000 fixtures would have replaced my $100 fixtures, and so one. I also would have used a professional yacht decorator for fixtures, furniture & furnishings, where instead, I used a friend that has a knack for decorating. (I'm sure you get the point.)
So, now we get down to labor... for the most part (75%) it was my labor alone. The rest was me, and one or both of my sons. All total, I have something slightly over 5,000 man hours building this boat. Needless to say, I did not pay myself, nor did I pay my sons for any labor. If you want something to compare that to however, my Marina charges $80 an hour for fiberglass repair, paint & body work. So based on that, I would have $400,000 in labor. So, I guess one could say, I have a total of $512,000 invested in this boat.
Could I sell it for that? No! I could sell it tomorrow for half that. But this is my 22 boat to build, and my 12th one over 35 feet. It looks (as my neighbors say) "store bought". Which I take as a compliment.
Now... if you want to build one for yourself, I recommend it. In my case, I have been retired since 1993, so I have an income, a great life and lifestyle, and lots of time on my hands. The "labor" in fact is what I save by building my own. The materials (if you average them) amount to an interest free loan I give myself, so they cost me less then $19,000 a year over 6 years. The end result?
I now have a custom live aboard size vessel - that is bigger, better, stronger, and safer then I could buy at twice the price - and the very best part? Mine is fully paid for already - and that's the key with building your own.
But... If you think you can do this and in any way compete with the production boat builders - you can't even come close.
