Questions for a ship captain?
i have a feeling it will be very hard to find someone to answer my questions on yahoo that is a ship captain but here it goes

I became a Merchant Mariner because I liked to travel and I liked the idea of being paid to see the world. Unfortunately ships today load and discharge so quickly that we seldom spend much time in port, so it isn't really a very good way of seeing the world anymore. One ocean view looks much like another. However transiting the Suez and Panama Canals always makes for an interesting trip.
I would definitely change careers and have done so a number of times. I’ve always shipped out and done real estate development in my off time. However, now is not a good time to be in real estate development so I’m back working at sea. For thirty years I’ve moved between real estate and shipping as one industry improved or declined. I’ve made way more money in real estate but it’s nice to have a trade to fall back on when the market crashes.
I think going to sea can be a good career, it really does pay pretty well and it grants a lot of freedom. I make a solid six figures a year and still get 6 months a year vacation. I ski, hunt elk, fish for trout, watch my kids play sports and write a little bit. Not a bad life. The down side is the six months I’m away from home each year.
I’ve worked on tugs, container ships, research ships, fishing boats, fish processing ships, tankers, oil clean up boats as Chief Mate or Master. Each type of ship has a different routine. But on all of them the Captain is responsible for all that happens aboard the vessel, although the Chief Engineer has the primary responsibility for the vessel’s machinery. The Captain had better be a good seaman, ship handler, administrator and communicator.
If you decide to join the Merchant Marine you’ll have to decide if you want to pursue an officer’s position or an unlicensed position. If you’re still in school and want to be an officer I suggest you look into one of this country’s maritime academies. The federal academy, King’s Point is free, and the six state academies are very reasonable with a lot of scholarship money available. So you wind up with a college degree, Unlimited Third Mates or Third Assistant Engineer license and often a naval commission as well, not a bad way to go.
If you want to ship out as an unlicensed crew member you need to get your paperwork in order and probably join a union: SIU, SUP or MFOW would be your choices.
