A nice sea/lake boat?
We have been fortunate enough by the grace of God to be able to move to a lake home in our community. I am interested now in purchasing a boat to complete the lake dream. I've looked at Regal and SeaRay but am not very aware of many other brands. I'd like either a ski boat or a boat with some sort of comfortable cabin where we can spend a night on the lake or ocean. The boats I've seen that pique my interest are different from one another, so any recommendations similar to either one of them are welcome. For comfort and cabin, the SeaRay Sundancer 305 or 310 or the Regal 2520 RX. I love wake boarding. Any recommendations similar to these boats or recommendations based on your experiences would be appreciated, thank you!
First off, you're going to have to figure out what you really want to do. No single boat does everything well, nor can do everything people want to do. Both would be TERRIBLE for wake boarding. You could wake board behind the Regal, but the wake will be very wide since the boat is 8'6" wide and heavy. For get about using the Sundancer at all. I own three different boats for doing different things. I have a boat for the lake for water skiing, wake boarding and tubing at my lakefront home, a Sea Ray 260 Sundancer for bay & ocean use, and a motor yacht for extended cruising. I've been a boater all my life and have over 40 years behind the helm, so I know what I'm talking about.
The Sundancers that you're looking at are the LEAST trailerable! Unless you have extensive experience towing heavy loads, don't trailer these boats. I use to teach "Trailering" to boaters. You'll need a Diesel pick up truck to pull that size and weight of boat. Then you'll also have to pay "Over Size" permit fees since most states only allow up to 8'6" width for a trailer.
The Regal is on the upper limits for wake boarding and will throw a very wide and tall wake. You'll need to look at smaller boats in the range of 19'-22' feet and prepped for that type of sport. Sea Ray, Regal, Maxum, Bayliner, Cobalt, Mastercraft, Malibu, Wellcraft, Monterey are some others to look at too. All of the companies that I listed, have a wake boarding boat in the line up.
If you elect to go with a "Cruiser" style boat, then opt for something no bigger than 27' for the most part. Boats in that size range will be at the 8'6" width limit, so you can trailer them. However, again, you're going to need to have a Diesel truck to have the pulling power for something that big. There are gasoline trucks that can pull that load, but the MPG will drop by at least 50%. With a Diesel, you'll lose only 1-2 MPG. There's still the need for behind the wheel towing experience too. How everything works and goes down the road is night and day different! Stopping being the hardest and lane changes the next biggest challenge.
