First time boat buyer?
I'm looking to buy my first boat this spring/summer and was wonder if a few of you from experience could answer a few questions. My interests in buying this boat are fishing/recreational ( wakeboarding, skiing, tubing, cruising). I will also be fishing and doing watersports on big lakes and small ones as well. I am willing to spend money but I would like to keep the boat with in $20,000- $30,000.
1. What Brand and Model would you suggest and why?
2. I don't live near a lake so I would be buying a boat and trailer combo. Where and how should I store this ?
3. What sort of extra things will I have to buy? I live in Va and I mean like tags, taxes things like that.

1. mercury or mercruiser powered. merc has an excellent warranty, that you are unlikely to ever use. and they go above and beyond that warranty very often in the pursuit of customer satisfaction. number one on the water for good reasons.
brand of hull doesnt matter as much. they are all built about the same, biggest differences tend to be how they are wired. some brands use scotchlock wire connectors.

scotch lock connectors are very quick and easy to install. no need to strip wires or crimp connectors, just put the wires in the connector and close it.
vibration pulls the wires loose in time. its wide open to corrosion with plenty of moisture around to speed it up.
if its built using scotch locks, quality is sacraficed in return of quicker production.
2. much over 24' long is diffucult to trailer, if it can be done at all. 20' with a folding hitch, like most new trailers have, fits in most garages. 18' fits even better.
lots of the places where you can luanch have storage parking. some have both in water and on trailer spots. i'd recommend keeping it on the trailer, no moss or algea or barnacle buildup. drain plug out and water doesnt build up, bilge pump doesnt fail or drain battery allowing a slow leak to sink it.
tsunami's dont get it as easily either.
3.insurance. regristration. life jackets and other keep in the boat emergency supplies. mainence and plenty of fuel.
4. what i would suggest.
sterndrive, or inboard/outboard. its not the best ski boat design. its not the best fishing boat design. but it does both well.
bowrider, unless you plan on overnight trips. bowriders give you lots of room for passengers and more room to fish from more different parts of the boat (important as number of fishers gets bigger).
something with a factory installed ski tower. it may hamper only fishing only trips (if not easily removable like some are), but it makes getting up and going much easier for skiiers and wakeboarders, especially beginners, since the direction of pull is as much UP as it forward. the upward pull also helps for doing tricks and catching air.
factory installed means the boat is actually strong enough built to support it. not a good part to just add to anything.
fish and ski, or FNS model. it has a good place to mount an electric trolling motor, and probably includes on all wired in already. electric trolling motors are great for species like bass, where you may want to patrol shore lines. and other species like trout, where a nice slow troll speed works best. its quiet and uses no gas, but a good trolling plate works too for slow speed trolling.
22' is probably about as much as your stated budget will cover in new boats. that would come with a 5.7L V8 motor most likely, and guzzle gas.
an 18' probably gives you the option of the 4.3L V6, you'll see very near the exact same top speeds, close to the same accelration, and burn less gas.
biggest difference is how many people it will comfortably hold. if you dont need to hold more then 4 on a normal trip and 45 or 6 on a crowded trip, the 18' is much more economical way to go.
carb or fuel injected, its an option on most motors. fuel injected usually gets more power on the same amount of gas. fuel injected also automatically adjusts to altitude changes and its effect on air density.
if you plan on traveling with the boat, going from near sea level to 5,000' like lake tahoe, fuel injection is the ONLY way to go. they are self adjusting to the conditions.
carbs need manually adjusted, even if you can do it yourself its still a PITA to have to do.
fuel injection option will cost more, but its worth every penny and more. fuel injection is the only reason new cars can make so much power while getting so many MPGs and be cleaner running at the same time......

I had several friends who had ski boats and lived in the Clear Lake area. . We used to put in at the Egret Bay Rd boat ramp under the bridge and boat across Clear Lake to Taylor Lake, Nasa Rd 1 also has a boat ramp but can get crowded on weekends. if the waves were to big there continued further north under Red Bluff Rd to the smoother waters which also had a slalom course. Would also sometimes go to Lake Conroe.
Good to know. Now let me tell you a bit about the end of the river, where it flows into the Gulf. I used to work around the area for around 10 years or so. The very last place with a road is Venice, LA. It’s a sort of port for the oil industry. Beyond that, on the east side of the river is one more small settlement called Pilot Town, where they pick up the river pilots to bring the big freighters in. (Required by law) Other than that, there are no other towns beyond. There are oil facilities around on both sides with canals that parallel the river between the ocean and the river. Those are calmer than the river in currents but usually have crew boat traffic on occasion and seaplane travel on the rare occasion. The very end, the last mile if you will, is a rabble dike on both sides and no land. If there is bad weather, it gets nasty right in there. Getting back from the end may not be quite as much fun as getting there. Lots of traffic in the river from Venice on down, barges, crew boats, freighters, and ski boats, doing taxi service for third party quick runs. On both sides are break waters that extend out into the river that serve as markers for the channel with radar reflectors. I’ve seen the [USS go up the river before. I’m glad you have experience. The lower end isn’t for the beginner though it would seem to be. While you are in the lower area, there is an old civil war fort on both sides of the river. It was put there to prevent the old sail ships from coming up to New Orleans. The west side has a museum of stuff found on the grounds. They had chains they would stretch across the river at night with cannon to take any ship out while it could not maneuver. I wish you well on your trip. Wish I could join you but such is not possible at this time.
