What should my wife and I know before booking an all inclusive resort vacation?
My wife and I were married 9 years ago, and are beginning to look at all inclusive resorts, and its already overwhelming! We do not golf, scuba, or sail...but love to eat, drink, swim, and shop, as well as love adventure tours and the spa.
I am sure there are several tricks we need to know before blowing thousands on this trip.
Any help???
Thousands and thousands of people travel to JA every year with no issues or problems. They leave their resorts and hotels and go on tours and intact with the locals with no issues. Jamaica, like any other developing country has it's issues but these are confined mostly to Kingston or areas of Montego Bay. You don't need to hide behind the walls of your hotel, you just need to be smart and confident. Don't flash cash, use your hotel safe, don't be wandering on the beach at 2am; these are things that you wouldn't do at home so it boggles the mind why some people do it while in Jamaica. It is easy to become very relaxed in Jamaica and most Jamaicans want you to have a good time and come back again. They are proud people who are proud of their island and their heritage. Getting to know them makes all the difference, IMHO, in making a Jamaican holiday.
There are a lot of people that depend on the tourist dollar to feed their children, buy school uniforms, and pay school fees, so yes, at times they can be assertive in their selling. The simplest and most easiest way to manage this is a polite "no thank you ,respect" and move on. Sometimes they will ask again or try again, but they are trying to sell, and most, 99% of the vendors will respect your "no thanks" and move on to the next potential customer. If they don't ask, then how do they know if you might buy something. There are some pretty talented artists in Jamaica selling original pieces of art work and carvings that you can watch them make right on the beach.
Going A-I is nice if you know that you won't want to explore and eat and drink in other places. Negril, for example, has many bars and restaurants that have great drink prices and some really great food. A-I, IMHO, would be a waste of money as a result. There are a few places that will offer breakfast with their rate which can be a good option as finding a good lunch and dinner is easy in Negril. On the beach various food and items are for sale such as jerk pork, lobster, baked goodies, fresh fruit & fruit juice, and many souvenirs.
Here is a website to have a look at what kind of accommodations are on offer in Negril. They range from A-I to just breakfast to just a room and a bed. You can rent a full villa if that is what you wanted. The accommodations are all along the beach, beach road and into the cliff area. There are some really nice properties so you don't have to go with a big named A-I type resort and therefore have your money go to a local business/family.

As for tours, some people get caught up in the laid-back experience of the beach and don't go anywhere despite plans made. From Negril there are a ton of things to do besides the usual beach happenings like jet-skiing, snorkeling, diving, parasailing, and just floating in the warm Caribbean sea. There are so many wonderful things to do and see in Jamaica, experience it for yourself, don't let anyone tell you that it is unsafe to leave your resort. It is safe. Go on a group tour, or better yet hire a private driver and explore through his eyes. The money that you pay him will go a long way in supporting his family. As for shopping, well that is not worth while in Jamaica except for your souvenirs...but you will be too busy doing other stuff that shopping can be saved for when your at home.
Walk the beach, have a pancake breakfast and blue mountain coffee at Firefly, stop at the local bars and have a red stripe, swim in the Caribbean sea, have a wonderful romantic dinner at LTU and watch the sunset, visit Rick's Cafe to see the cliff divers, have some jerk chicken at Best of the West, go to Ladies' Night on a Thursday at The Jungle Nightclub, swing on a chair at Sunbeach, have a lobster dinner at Canoe, Saturday dinner and a show at Seastar (free shuttle from your hotel, or better yet stay there!), if you do have the need to shop, go to the Hi-Lo Plaza or the duty free shops at the small mall, .....there is so much to do!!!
