Can you use a recreational kayak on white water?
I like to kayak. I enjoy a day out on the lake/river but also enjoy an adventure and white water. Can I use a recreational kayak on flat and white water? Any recommendations? I'm not talking class 5 rapids maybe 2 or 3
That somewhat depends on the boat. If it has an oversized cockpit (more than 36" long x 20" wide), I would say NO. To do whitewater, even Class I and II, you need a tightly fitted sprayskirt to keep waves and spray out of the boat. For control in fast water you need to have good body contact with the sides and deck of the boat with your hips and thighs. Most rec boats are just way too roomy.
And if the boat is wider than 30" overall and deeper than 10" I would also say no, as it will be difficult to manuever quickly to position, hard to reach the water to dig down and paddle and also would tend to flip completely if it went over on it's side. Does your kayak have sealed bulkheads fore and aft to prevent the hull from filling with water? If not, you would have to fill it with foam or inflatable flotation bags to prevent being swamped. Trying to right, drain and re-enter a high-volume swamped boat in fast water can be nearly impossible and could put you at great risk of hypothermia or even drowning.
If you really want to do whitewater, I highly recommend you buy a used whitewater kayak. Since the guys that paddle whitewater often upgrade their boats it is not hard to find a used playboat for under $300 on the Craigslist ads in most parts of the country. Just make sure you get one that fits you right (fit is important in kayaks, just like it is with bikes or skis.) If you see one listed in an ad you can get information on manufacturer specs and user reviews on http://www.paddling.net, even for older and discontinued models.
You might need a shorter paddle for whitewater, too, like under 220 cm. Don't attempt even Class I and II without some instruction and/or going along with someone experienced. At the very least, practice on a calm pond with your boat, flooding it and practicing emptying and re-entering it as well as flipping over while in the boat so you can practice bailing out of the cockpit underwater and self-rescue.

Rhiannon. I just love your pictures of the boats and water. I too love the West Coast (having been born and raised here). I can't imagine living anywhere else (and I have). This is home to me. The smell of summer is my favourite smell. It brings back lots of wonderful memories of growing up here in Victoria (the smell of sea grass, kelp (or seaweed), hot sand, and Coppertone suntan lotion). We were on our boat (little ski boat – 16' Donzi) the other day and tripped over to Pender Island for a little dinner and came face-to-face with Bruce Greenwood at Poets Cove which gave me a little thrill (you know Bruce Greenwood … he played President Kennedy in the movie Thirteen Days – a Canadian actor playing an American President, no less). On the way back to Sidney we witnessed an Orca doing a somersault out of the water. Very exciting day for us, for sure. Well, meeting the actor was not exciting for Sandy — he feels that they are just regular people like you or I and don't deserve the amount of fanfare that we “fans” give them. I, on the otherhand, am in awe and gobsmacked when meeting an actor in the flesh. Truly thrilling.
